2003 36L Journey bed

I have a 2003 Winnebago Journey and I have a question about the mattress size. It is listed as having a queen sized bed and according to my measurement is is just that. The problem is that the previous owner put a foam mattress in there and it is HEAVY!!! Plus it overhangs but 8" at the foot and when the slide comes in it pushes the mattress over several inches. It is overhanging both sides also. Since the frame is lower than the edges that would tell me the mattress should fit inside the frame? What do you have in yours?

It most likely is supposed to have what the call, an RV Queen. They are 6" shorter than a regular queen. Google rv mattresses and you will be able to find all the different sizes. When I got my last one it had a regular queen in it and it would hit the wardrobe when it was in. I always had to lift the mattress as I held the slide button. It didn't stay long.

Well,
Winnes and Itascas in the same length, in about the same era, have lots of similarities. Ours is an '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the CAT C-7 330HP. The mattress on our bed is a regular queen. We used to have a Sleep number which was a factory unit. I got tired of issues with it after about 12 years of ownership and we opted for a regular mattress. Yes, it's a bit on the heavy side but, I don't carry it around all day so, a little heavier isn't really a big deal for us anyways. Only when we tilt the bed up for access to all the ton of junk below the bed is it a bit of a problem. Being that it's a bit over the weight of the Sleep number, it over powers the air springs that should hold it up.

I simply created a removable strut (a stick) that makes sure things stay up and don't come bonking me in the head while I'm probing around under the bed.

Now, we don't have a "frame" so to speak. Our "frame" is smaller than what the mattress sits on. And the mattress sits on a PLATFORM that's oh, maybe 6" to 8" larger than the frame below it, all the way around except for the head. When we bring the closet slide in, yes, it does kiss the mattress and move it by about an inch or so, depending on how much that mattress has been shifted around making the bed and all that.

Now, just for info here, our bed is parallel to the coach. I think they call that a "north - south bed? Whereas, if a bed sit crossways, it's an "east - west" bed? Not quite positive on this.

You are correct on the orientations. Mine is also north-south. And I think David hit the nail on the head. I am 6'3" so a RV mattress would be a bit short but as it is right now getting around the side of the bed on the passenger side is a real chore. My biggest problem is the roam beds weight, It weighs at least 100 lbs. and maybe more. Since I have to get it off of there to access the engine I need something a bit more manageable. It is very comfortable but............ It may come in the house and replace my bed.

I replaced the mattress in our Horizon with this Serta one. It’s a little thicker than the original but the other dimensions are the same as what Winnebago installed new. We went with the plush and because it sits on a hard surface not box springs…it’s perfect for us. It’s only a fraction of the original ones weight, very easy to move around.

Is that mattress flush with the end of the bed? How about the width?

It hangs over the platform about an inch on the sides and about half that at the foot. When the slide closes it pushes the mattress over a little…1/2 inch or so.

Original Mattress Factory will make them any size you want. They make all of their mattresses after they've been ordered. Its what they do. I replaced an RV King with a RV Queen. The King was just too big, hard to get around to make the bed.
