2010 2013 Winnebago Journey 34

We have been looking at a 2010 Journey 34Y and a 2013 Journey 34B. Both only have the 340hp engine and Allison 2500 transmission which is of some concern with the limited towing capacity.
We have heard there were some issues with the 2013 long slide but would like to hear from those who have experienced that issue.
We are wondering if we should be concerned about any additional issues with these years of models.

Thanks.

What are your towing concerns with the Allison MH2500 transmission? How heavy do you intend to tow? We have over 80,000 trouble free towing miles on ours, 4,000 # toad, coast to coast, border to border. Our rig is advertised and equipped for up to 10,000 #.

Hi Fleetman --

Your coach with your engine/transmission setup is rated GCWR 33,000 lbs less GVWR 27,910 lbs = 5,090 lbs towing capacity.

The 34H with the CAT C7 and 3000 Allison is rated GCWR 37,910 lbs less GVWR 27,910 lbs = 10,000 lbs towing capacity.

Both have the same 10,000 lb hitch, but the Cummins/Allison 2500 setup limits the coach to the lower 5,090 tow capacity.

Straight from the original brochure.

I thought I would like to have the option to pull a F-150 or small 4 wheel to be able to go off road some but I can probably live with the 5000 lb limit with a small suv. Are other of you guys aware of any issues with these models?
Thanks

Don, a theoretical question to think about. If my loaded coach weight is 24,000 pounds and I am towing an 9,000 pound pickup truck....my GCWR is right at the 33,000 pound manufacturers limit. How will my engine/transmission power train know where and how that combined load is distributed? Ron

Hi FleetMan --

Yep, you are spot-on. The actual #'s tell the real story. So as you describe your weights, you are legal to tow 9K lbs. as your coach actual weight is at the 24K lbs. weight.

Unfortunately it comes down to just that - 'legal weight'. God forbid anyone gets into an accident and a wipper-snapper lawyer gets ahold of your weights and presents a case that you are beyond either GVWR or GCWR. This may be the nail in the coffin. In your case, your actuals allow you to tow 9K lbs which should be defensible in a court of law.

That's why I quoted the published weights from Winnebago.

P.S. I am only an attorney in 'Philadelphia'.

Don

Having grown up in Northeast Pennsylvania, I fully understand the “Philadelphia Lawyer” quip.
