380hp vs 400 hp

I am researching to purchase a new Journey. I was looking through the 2013 and 2014 brochures.

In 2013 the 40U is listed as having a 380 hp ISC engine, but in 2014 it is listed as having a 380 hp ISL engine. Is that a misprint?

I think you meant to say "but in 2014 it is listed as having a 400 hp ISL engine." Any yes, you did make a misprint.

It's very likely that the engine manufacturer has tweaked the engine to rate 20 more horsepower. How much did the torque increase? That's what gets you to the top of the pass. I doubt if you'd notice a change of 20 hp.

ISC and ISL are different cubic inch engines , I believe , so there should be a difference in torque.
Now , I've got to go and find out.

Yep, ISC is 8.3L and the ISL is 8.7L. The ISL is basically a stroked ISC to add cubic inches.

Also the 42E has a 400 hp ISL, I know diesels are more about torque and less about hp. The 450 hp version has the same torque as the 400 hp, so I assume there will not be much difference? Other 42 ft coaches I am looking at some have the 380 ISC, some have 450 ISL, but only Winnebago had the 400 hp ISL.

The 42E/40U also have 3 AC units but only 8kw generator, others with 3 AC's have 10kw. Will the 8k in the 42E power all three units at once? (other 42e owners)

I read some time ago that Cummins has discontinued the ISC engine. Winnebago has replaced it with the ISL rated for lower HP than used in the 450 ISL in the Tour/Ellipse. Likely, it is not a misprint.

The Journey 40U has the ISL Cummins motor. The hp. rating is not what you need to really look at, look at the Torque rating. You'll find that there is very little difference in between the 380 hp. 400 hp. and 425 hp. as far as the Torque rating is concerned. The ISL is a strong reliable motor no matter what Hp. it's chipped for. As to the A/C question our 40U has the 3 A/C's but you can only run the front 2, or the rear 1 at any given time being as they are on 2 different zones on the thermostat.

Only 2 ac at one time run on the 8,000 gen . The ISC went away due to exspence of emissions test, and close HP to the ISL. Now they have one less eng to certify.

Lault is correct. The ISC has been discontinued. I think the ISL 380 HP has the same torque as the old ISC but I cannot put my finger on it. I am thinking it was around 880??
I run all three a/c's using the 8K generator without any problems. Line 1 has 45 amps and Line 2 has 35 Amps which is plently of power when traveling down the road.
I am puzzled by the statement about the thermostat? All the zones can be run at the same time (although I do not recommend you set them at the same temperature). The older thermostat only had two zones but they both can be turned on and running. The newer thermostat has three zones and I run them all the time if needed. At night I only run the front and when the motor home is cool enough I only run the rear zone.

Dengraham; My info about running the 2 A/C's on zone 1 and the rear A/C on zone 2 but not being able to run both Zone 1 and 2 at the same time came from the maint. teck. that did my PDI. Did not know that you could run zone 1 and 2 at the same time. Does this apply to the 2 furnaces that are on separate zones also that they can be run at the same time? How do you set the "T" Stat to run both zones?

Thats odd, the 2014 I am looking at has a 3 zone stat. It is setup so each zone controls an AC unit. There are 3 remote sensors, one for each zone. You set each zone independently as to temp. In my current MH, I set back AC at lowest temp and front higher so rear runs more. At night the opposite, I only have 2. It will take a bit of trial and error as the front sensor is all the way forward. I fear the front may become an icebox at night, but see how it goes.

The propane furnaces are different, the rear is on one zone. The front furnace though is on the mid and front zone. So if either zone calls for heat the front furnace kicks on. I did not try the reverse cycle heat so not sure if that is 1unit/1zone or maybe only 2 units have heat pumps? Will test tomorrow at PDI...

I think it is still archaic to have to do all this manually. I will be researching a 3 zone programmable t-stat as one of my first upgrades.

As to the original question, apparently as was said earlier, the 380hp is now the ISL. Definitely an upgrade in torque with bigger block, 1050 vs 1150 (10% increase) over the ISC. The 42E had and still has the 400hp ISL, 1250 ft/lb, (same as 450hp version).

And that's why Cummins stopped making the ISC for on-road use. The HP overlap was making the ISC redundant. Now the choice is either an ISB or ISL, no more ISC.
