80w-90 for front wheel bearings

i guess Workhorses have oiled (rather than grease)front wheel bearings. Is there a kit for Ford chassis rigs?
I used to work on a fleet of dump trucks we converted to run 80w-90 gear oil in the front wheel bearings. It required a new seal and a cup where the grease cap was. At the time, we thought it was the hot ticket. We never burned up a bearing after the conversion. Is better the enemy of good enough?
