altenator replacement

Hi and thanks in advance.
86 Elandan, chevy 454, 43k miles, 27 foot

I need to replace the altenator but I don't see how anyone could get there hands in such a small space. other than the colwling inside that exposes the top of the engine, I don't see where access can be had. What am I missing? I need to get to the altenator so I can find the part number to get the new one, the guys at store can't look up the one I need. Any suggestions?

Don't quote me, but it is probably a P30 van application. Our 89 Georgie Boy is built on a P30 van chassis.

As far as changing the alternator, your best bet is from inside, through the dog house. One main bolt holding it on, the pivot point. (should be up top) One bolt down low that holds it in place after you tension the belt. 9/16" and 5/8" wrenches I believe. Maybe a 3/4". A flashlight helps, too.

I changed ours in a campground after it quit on a trip. Took the dog house off, laid a blanket on top of the engine and pulled it out from the inside. All while enjoying the a/c keeping me cool.

Putting it back in required a 2nd person, my DW, under the front of the rv helping to get the belt aligned.

All in all, not a bad fix for me, but I do all my own repairs.

Take your time and be patient. You can do it.

Mike
