Is it possible you have engine assist on the water heater? We have that and whenever we arrive at a place the water is the hottest it will ever get. When you say it overheats are you meaning the pressure relief valve is popping off or just that the water is hoter than you prefer? With only 10 gal. of water you need to add cold water to stretch the hot water as far as possible during a shower or dishwashing. Most of us have found that the DSI heaters do not have adjustable thermostats and do run hotter than the older ones.

Iagree with you that the thermostat has no adjustment, it is not on the engine assist, but running on electric only. we have the unit is a campground all summer and will probably have to use some cold with the hot...seems like though the water never got as hot as now before!!!!
I usually throw a meat thermometer in a coffee cup and run the hot water in it. From what I understand the temp should be between 125-140. Not 100% accurate but close enough.

sounds like it is too hot @ 125 degrees but I will check it...Thanks JC
The thermostat has to be tight against the tank and the adhesive insulation must be put back in place over it or the water heater can get overly hot. The tabs on the bayonet mount may have to be bent to accomplish this. You can cause them to loosen by disconnecting the electrical connectors without holding the body of the stat firmly against the water heater as the mount is very thin sheet metal.
Note that there should be two stats. One for controlling the temperature and the other as a high limit safety. There is an adjustable stat available also. RV water heaters due to the small tank capacity are set at a high temperature to give you a bit more shower time etc.
