Blown C-7 Turbo on 07 Journey
On way to Indy last week, MH was having a yellow check engine light and a red engine light at the same time, light up on dash panel then got "check engine" a few seconds later 'stop engine" and then a few seconds later they would clear. This only happened when going up hill when transmission dropped into 6/5 gear and engine rpms hit 1950. Once or twice it happened in 6/4 at 1950 rpm.
The week before I had just had an exhaust booster tube replaced which blew due to holes caused by corrosion for ~ $1300.
For the Indy trip, engine code indicated high exhaust heat when the local CAT repair shop did their computer analysis. I have a good working relationship with them as the house goes there for general maintenance.
They had a little difficulty getting to the reasons for the high exhaust codes but finally came up with a bad turbo with corrosion frozen valves. Estimated cost for replacement is ~$2600.
House is a Winnebago Journey 36G with the C-7 Cat 350 engine. It also has just crossed the 100 K mile mark. The only issues I've had with this engine is a bad alternator ( 2 of them - one my fault for using wrong torque on pulley), and loose water pump belt. I've also lost all water on engine when the upper hose clamp corroded and the hose cam loose.
I've been having a slightly difficult time in starting the engine when it is below 50 deg F which started this past winter in NE. Now I preheat engine for a couple hours when in cold climates and once warm engine starts nicely. I will tell you that this house does travel north into New England and Maine during winter and get a lot of road salt. This salt stays on the house and engine for up to a week at a time so corrosion is expected. Due to my work and time of work it's difficult to get the house cleaned while on the road. It get an underbelly wash when it gets home. So all in all the house and it's components are doing pretty well considering its use. I'm happy with the C-7 and the power it has when working and on the road. I tow a large Jeep and never notice either through miles/gal or in pulling power that it's back there.
I'll let CAT replace the Turbo, it's just the cost of having and using a MH.
