Just returned from a trip. The next morning I noticed what I think is gear oil all over the right rear undercarriage of the coach, on the ground underneath, and on the front of the Jeep. First indication of any problem after 10k miles & harder drives than we just finished.
When I crawled underneath, it appears that there is a vent plug on the top right of the differential housing - was the coach venting fluid due either to excessive fluid/heat build-up?
I can't find anything in the W/H manual about this - how do I check the fluid level & where would I add gear oil if I needed to? Is this a common occurrence to lose diff oil & something I need to check frequently?

There is a square recess that will accept a 1/2 inch ratchet square (As I recall it's a 1/2 inch). That's where you check it. Again, as I recall, the fluid is supposed to be up to the bottom of the square.
I don't know why it would come out of the vent tube in quantity though.

Just a thought. I had a similar problem on a Ford F-53 chassis. Only the oil was all over on the left side and all over the front of the toad. I found I had a pin hole in the oil filter on the generator. Generator mounted on left side in my case. The generator had not been running but still dripped oil. Only about a half quart before I found it. But under the coach and on the toad it looked like more. When I first noticed the oil, it appeared to be very heavy oil. I guess that was the road dust that had collected in it.

If you know for certain where the oil is coming from this may not apply. I had a similar problem on my F-53, it was an axle seal. Ford dealer said there apparently was a problem on the Ford plant axle line and he had replaced a number of them. Ford replaced mine no charge.

Had same issue with mine. First time it happened they cleaned the vent, second time they relocated the vent up to the frame. Third time they said they wanted to replace the vent with a different style from DANA. The vent was backordered at the time. Our Las Vegas service center now has the vent, but we are on the East Coast & haven't had the opportunity to stay someplace long enough to get the vent sent elsewhere and installed.
Good news is it hasn't leaked this trip. What I noticed before was that when it did leak we were pulling long grades with the TOAD in high temps out west.
The Workhorse Part Number I was given for the vent is W8002811. Hope this helps.
