Has anyone had experience driving both solid front axel and independent front end (like the new Evolution chassis) coaches, and if so could you describe the apparent difference in handling?

Sorry, subject should be IFS, not IRS.

Robert,
We owned a 03 Journey DL and then traded it for a 05 Vectra 40KD. The performance difference is astounding! Driving the interstates in California will test your mettle, particularily when evaluated the ride of your coach. Our Journey DL would "beat your teeth out". The teeth beating disappeared when we bought the Vectra. Some of the definitive improvements are as follows:[LIST

56 degree wheel cut (turns on a dime)

Air bags mounted outside of rail (much less road shock translated into chassis

Excellent stability control in high winds

Precise steering response (Mercedes Benz front end design from Daimler-Chyrsler)
Before we traded to Vectra, we felt the price difference between Journey DL and Vectra was too much. At this point, we would not trade back to a Journey. There are numerous other features in Vectra that make it more desirable for us. None the less, the Journey still remains an excellent Diesel Pusher. The CAT engine is still my personal preference (Vectra uses 400 Cummins ISL).
Happy Trails to you,
Richard

Richard thanks for the reply,I have been looking at the Vectra and wondered whether the chassis would be worth the price difference.
