Easy Upgrade: "Highway Foot Peg" & Give Your Back A Rest

ADD A RV HIGHWAY PEG

For over 20,000 miles I have been contemplating the idea of adding a bicycle peg to the right side-wall... just above the gas pedal. WHY?

I wanted to rest my right foot on something comfortably vs. sneaking my foot behind the gas pedal, which I can only do when I’m wearing socks as my shoe is too big to get around the pedal. That… and because it’s not very safe when I do this, but when you are on “cruise control” leaving your foot on the gas pedal is not comfortable either.
So I came up with a viable option, and I love this easy, cheap upgrade!

What I elected to do is use a 1/2" round aluminum tubing you can get at home depot in 36" lengths and I cut off the end to ~5-1/8".

Then I took a 5/16" x 6" long carriage bolt to slip inside the tube. I also selected the carriage bolt because the end of the bolt is round and smooth and more pleasing to look at... and because I could grind the square ridges of the bolt down to fit inside the round aluminum tube.

Hint: You want to lock the carriage bolt inside the round aluminum tube so it does not rotate; and to do that I used a pair of pliers (and a cloth to prevent the tube from scratching) to crush the round end of the tube, just a bit, so it would accept the square side of the carriage bolt... and then I pressed (hammered) the bolt into tube for a very snug fit.

To drill a hole in the side-wall you just remove the sliding drawer from underneath (releasing the slider-clips with your fingers) and then determine where you are going to drill.

Then I drilled a 1/4" hole in the right side-wall and I made the hole really tight. …Add a flat washer on each side, lock washer and 2 nuts on the inside. (The 2 nuts lock together and leave a shorter peg… or you can cut the bolt and tube to you desired length.)

Now I have a place to rest my foot that reminds me of a "Highway Peg" commonly found on motorcycles.
The important think you want is a smooth peg so your foot can slide off easily and quickly in the event of an immediate need to brake or step on the gas.
Note: I have tested the speed I can slide my foot off the peg, and I have no trouble finding the brake pedal or the gas pedal. … And my lower back says “thank you” all the time now!

The last point I will make is this: If you commonly where boots then I recommend you mount your peg slightly higher and slightly more forward then I did, because a boot has more toe height.

I love this little extra upgrade!

DISCLAIMER: I am not recommending you do this modification to your coach. I’m just sharing what I did. So if you elect to add a “Highway Peg” to your RV or Truck, then you do so “AT YOUR OWN RISK.”

Nice work, I must admit I would like to do something like that too, not sure if I would ever find the "sweet spot" for the height though, even on my motorcycle I am always stretching around the crash bars on long rides.

On my last long camping trip, I set the cruise control to 58 mph ( Towing a car in California limit is 55 ) and surprisingly was very comfortable with my foot flat on the floor. And even more surprising to me was how comfortable I was with driving slower like that, I usually pass everyone, this was weird but very nice.

What is the difference in your ETA when going 55 verses say 65 or 70
