Inner entrance door handle removal

I have a 2003 Journey and I need to get the door latch assembly apart. I have removed the three screws and I can get it to move around but it is not coming off without removing the inner handle so the inner plate can come off over the shaft. Has anyone done this or know how to do it? I see a cap in the end of the handle and I suspect there is a nut under it but that cap looks rather hard to get out without damage. Want to ask first before trying. I also had the post about the door vibration and nobody replied to that so I am hoping to get some info on this part of that job. Once I get a tiny bit of access to the space between the door skins I can look in there with a borescope and form a repair plan.

Unfortunately sometimes those plugs have to be damaged to remove them. You can likely find a replacement at a hardware store.

Can you verify that the attaching nut is under that plug? I don't want to damage it only to find that is not the way in.

Post a picture of your door handle and someone that has taken their's apart may see it and let you know.

rickf, my wife was complaining about the door rattling, but it is on my bad ear side, so I never could here it. I found the door latch itself was not tight when closed. I loosed it up and moved it in a bit at a time until it shut snugly. There is a name for that bolt, but I can't think of it right now. You loosen the end and slide it around until you find a position that the door shuts soundly. This may not be your problem, but thot I'd pass it on.

Chuck, I found the rattle thanks to the good folks helping me on the thread pertaining to the door noise. So at this point I do not need to remove that handle but I will get a pic tomorrow so if someone can tell me I am sure it will come in handy for the future.

I never need to mess with the handle. The inner and outer plates come apart like a clamshell with both handles intact. Maybe you missed removing a screw? If I remember right, one screw is kind of hidden, and I missed it once, and then I just got the wiggle you are talking about.

I also think the latch coming out of the edge of the door has to be in the right position, so turn the handles while pulling the halves apart.
