Inverter fan runs too often

I have an inverter - Xantrex XM1000 - wired at the factory to a couple of the circuits in my 27n Sunstar (2014).

My question is, why does the cooling fan on the inverter cycle on and off - even while plugged in to shore power? It should not be "inverting" anything while plugged into the park pedestal, right?

It seems to do this even when the inverter is turned off at the control panel. I know the 120 circuits go through the inverter before powering the TV, etc, but would that act of passing through power heat up the inverter? Or is it malfunctioning?

Questions, questions...

The inverter will still charge your batteries on shore power. Maybe check your batteries for water. Your interior lights are 12 volt so your inverter is being used for them.

I just looked at your inverter specs. It does not have a charger built in.

Could your incoming voltage be low enough that it stays in inverter mode.

Is it mounted real close to your battery charger ?

If the fan runs with it off, it could be malfunctioning

Call Xantrex and describe what is happening.

The inverter is in pass through mode when off. The fan will still run intermittently to keep the circuitry cool.

To be clear...

Are you hearing the fan on the inverter, that's mounted in the basement?

Or on the converter, that's near the load center by the bed?

Yes, it does run a lot! I had the same unit in my 2014 View- it ran a lot as well.

As a matter of fact-it ran a lot for 26 months-and quit running.

The new one, cost $509. But, it was easy to replace.

I would suggest writing or calling winnebago customer service. They are very good about answering questions. They might just have some insight for you.

We sold our unit after 26 months & 36K miles. Our plan is to Cruise for awhile- I am having withdrawal, concerning aftersale

As tderone mentioned, you're probably hearing the converter, not the inverter. I believe the inverter can be shut off manually, either at the "Oneplace" panel or by tripping the ground fault outlet on the inverter itself.

If you continue to hear a fan it's the one in the converter. The converter runs intermittently as the batteries need charging. The more 12 volt power you use (lights, refrigerator control panel, furnace, vent fans, power ports, etc.) the more often the batteries need to be charged, and the more often the converter fan will run.

I have the same unit . the xm1000 fan runs on and off plugged into shore power with wall control off. the GFI on the front would trip intermittently, even with nothing plugged in. had to have unit replaced and the new unit fan does run the same way , but now the GFI does not trip. the TV and 3 other recepticals run through the inverter.

Although not on a Winnebago my friend has a Jayco Pinnacle 5er with the same inverter and his fan runs a lot when on shore power as well. He was told that it was normal operation. That was last year and this year meeting up with him it's still running the same way. Seems strange especially when it is turned off but it is the inverter fan that is running periodically.

Thank you all for the comments.

It is an Inverter (only), it is not a converter, it is not a battery charger, and it is not a combination unit.

It's cooling fan does run - too often - when in the pass-through mode, even when turned off at the panel ... seems crazy!

Glad to hear I'm not the only one experiencing this.

I will can Xantrex and post their response.

Thanks!

Well I called Xantrex, told them the situation, and their response was underwhelming. They said they had never heard of this problem before, and seemed confused by it. They had a little conference, and came up with the following:

They offered the idea that maybe a heat sensor, which turns on the fan when things get warm, was malfunctioning. I guess that makes sense.

When asked how to get warranty service, to have a tech look it over, they said they have no service available in Washington State, but there is one shop in California.

So I guess one would have to un-install it and ship it in somewhere for a checkup.

I guess I will just live with it for now....
