Locked up generator

08 Itasca meridian 40' dp.

Went over today to get the rv out of outside storage and head south for a bit and started the generator and it ran for a few minutes then it shut down and all the oil came out from the bottom. Outside temperatures were about 25 degrees and sunny.

I know it's really bad probably a locked up generator but I don't know why. I dropped it off at a Cummings dealer and won't know the damage (both financial and mechanical) until sometime next week. It only has about 1100 hrs on it.

This generator does not have a slide out tray so the labor will be expensive. I don't know if both the motor and generator are ruined or only one. I don't know if only one unit needs replaced can they be separated and the good unit continue to be used or must both the generator and the motor be replaced?

Any estimates for what I'm looking at for replacement?

Any replies appreciated.

Diesel 8000 Onan.

I did more research and found out that it could be a catastrophic oil leak. Like around the oil filter. I had the generator Serviced in June of last year and haven't used it much. The service notes indicate that when they removed the oil old filter they had to collapse it because it was so tight. Maybe they inadvertently left some old gasket on the housing and it finally broke loose if it is from a catastrophic oil leak then the motor would have shut down do to low oil pressure. There was no sound of destruction it just shut down.

You should clean it up real good, add some oil and see where you are loosing oil. Like others said , maybe the low oil switch saved the day for you and it will be something simple like a loose oil filter or drain plug.

It's at the Cummins shop right now waiting for a diagnosis. I'll let folks know the outcome.

My money is on a loose filter, didnt get old oil filter gasket off/slow leak or oil drain plug came off.
If the low oil pressure shutoff is working properly you should be ok. Make sure you find out cause so if your oil change dealer caused it you can go after him for damages.
You probably dont want to know worse case $$$$.

All I've been told so far is that the tech who wasn't there when I talked to them on the phone yesterday noted a loose oil filter and he said they were "looking to see if anything else was taking on oil" whatever that means. Didn't hear anything back today. Sounds likely that the oil filter at least had something to do with it. Hopefully they can replace the oil filter and refill with oil and all will be well. The service was done in the first week of July last year so I doubt it is still under any kind of warranty.

Btw the oil came out all at once not a slow leak.

I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Your Onan is designed that if Oil Pressure drops below 10 psi It Shuts off and won't re-start--At all. I'm sure that You'll be in good shape with a fresh Filter and a good Oil clean-up-- Be Careful and Listen what the Techs tell you- and Get a 2nd opinion if necessary !

Thanks for the replies. Turns out it was just the loose filter. They didn't charge anything because they may have been responsible. Not charging anything was very noble of them and I appreciated it.

Mighty considerate of them to not charge you, all things considered.
