Need to Sanitize My H2O Tank and System
I am buying a 2004 Adventurer that has sat for a couple years in the next few weeks. It is 150 miles from home, and on the way home I will stop for a couple days and have it serviced. What I am thinking is when I pick it up I'll put 10 gallons of water a cup of Bleach and let it slosh around in the tank (turning on faucets).. Letting it sit for a couple days while it gets serviced. Then drive it the rest of the way home.
My question is when I get home where are the dump valves for the tank and the drain points for the system?
I will then fill it with fresh water and flush it out.
Thanks LeeB

RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE: WHEN YOU PUT YOUR BLEACH SOLUTION in, first make sure it is a DISINFECTING BLEACH, (Many Low-Splash bleaches ae NOT Disinfecting); use 2-ounces per 15-gallon capacity (i.e. 36-gallon=6-ounces bleach/1-gal water, add to tank fill, then FILL TANK, and PUMP to each faucet until you SMELL Bleach to FILL ALL PIPING/ FIXTURES INCLUDING HW TANK; top off tank after filling all pipes/ HW tanks. This gives the proper PPM solution and allow to sit 3+ hours before draining, refill to rinse, drain/refill again. FILLING THE TANK AND ALL PIPING IS IMPORTANT TO SANITIZING PROPERLY. Get year from chassis, verify chassis Year/ and tank size specs from BROCHURE (E.g. Mine a 99 w/ a 2000 floorplan, which has smaller 34g fresh tank than the 36g tank in 99) Some might change though from 25 to 36g LUCK

The fresh water drain valve is located in the back of the storage bay that’s to the left of the entry door. The main system drain is in the water heater bay to the right of the entry door (just left of the water heater). Don’t forget to remove the drain plug on the water heater to get that water out(unless it had been in bypass, but drain it anyway). It will take time to get all the bleach thru the refrigerator ice maker(lots of ice batches). Also, if yours has a water filter under the sink, that filter should be removed first and replaced with the winterizing block or, if it’s still installed, replace it after the bleach cleaning.
Flush, flush, flush.

Unless you drive like a maniac, you will be getting very little 'sloshing'. In my opinion, it would be better to fill the tank and add the recommended amounts of bleach as responder THenne1713 indicated.

1/4 cup bleach per 15 gallons of water to sanitize then flush. Fill the tank and fill the lines. Sloshing won't do it. It also only needs to sit for 2-3 hours but it won't hurt to leave it longer. If you use a cup per 10 gallons it's going to take you several tank fulls to get it out of the system. Don't ask me how I know
