New tire sizes

My '05 Meridian needs new tires shortly and am beginning the frustrating search.

It has 255 80R 22.5 on it now by Michelin. Price is about $520 each plus tax, etc.

Can somebody out there give me another brand and/or size that will fit in place of the 255 80R 22.5s?

I have found lots of 255 70R 22.5s by different manufacturers but am not sure of the fit; i.e, wheel well clearance and duals kissing.

I called Freightliner and they said that all they could recommend was what Winnie ordered on the chassis when they shipped it out. A call to Winnie said Freightliner made the determination as to tire size. I kinda feel like I was talking to Harry Reid one minute and John Boehner the next.

The 80 series sidewalls are taller than the 70 series being the major difference, stand the two tires next to one another there will be a quite noticable height difference.

The smaller height, hence lower diameter, will mean the tire rotates more times per mile than the taller one, this will screwup the spedometer, the odometer, result in lower mpg, (AND NOONE IN M/H WANTS THAT) and in general is not a great idea.

Now if ya are looking to "Trick It Out", get 30 series, 2 feet wide, big heavy chain for the steering wheel and the head of whatever politician screws up the "Budget Battle and Misses the Deadline" hanging from the rear view mirror... and get a Primo Boombox with a BASS TUNNEL to really rock out..... lol

I was told by a Michelin dealer that a 265/75/22.5 was a good substitute for the 255/80/22.5. We were talking about if I needed one out on the road and the 255/80 wasn't available. He said the 265/75 was generally more available. I don't know about the validity of this, but he said...

I have an 05' Horizon and over a year ago I went with Firestone FS560 Plus tires (255/70R22.5). I did this for all tires (both steer and drive axles). The exact cost eludes me right now, but if I recall they were priced closer to $400 each. These are listed as “Commercial Truck” tires, but I can honestly say they are really decent tires. I have put only 5,000 miles on the tires, but can tell you that interstate driving is very smooth. In addition (and one of the main reasons I choose these tires) is that they have a much higher load rating then the older ones I had. This gave me a bit more load capacity for the front axle and also allows me to run the tires at a lower psi….which helps with the smoother ride.

I would shop that price. There have been recent increases, but I think that you can do a litte better.

That being said, you probably can't save that much on another size or brand. The Michelin is a good tire and you know that you will be happy with the ride and handling. Your Meridian deserves the best and even $600 shouldn't be a deal breaker.

Freightliner/Winnebago could have put on a cheaper tire, but Michelin XRV is what they chose.

The 265/75/22.5 is very close in diameter to the 255, rev per mile 537 vs. 541 for the 255 based on the specs I found on line. the 275 was .2" wider in cross section. I believe it is more readily available than the Michelin 255.

I went with the Toyo 265/ 75/ 22.5 as they are very similar is diameter as the previous gentlemen pointed out. Michelins don't appear to me to stand up to the uv rays as well as some others and show side wall cracking earlier in their life. Great quality and ride, no question. There are several manufactures that make 265/ 75/22.5

275/70/22.5 will work on the Journey/Meridian of that era. Mine came with 235/80/222.5 XRV's and I replaced them with 275/70 G670's. There has been no problem with spacing or speedo calibration.

Now I've had rivering with the G670's and I will be looking for another brand when I replace them next spring. Bridgestone and Toyo will likely be on the list since I have local dealers for those.

I just priced Michelins 235/80/22.5's at Costco installed out the door spin balanced filled with nitrogen six for $2,525. with warranties etc; (this included 9.5% sales tax)---you might check to see if they have your 255's for a price you like?

I spoke to them about DOT because there floor tires were about six months old---they said they had to order the tires anyway and would see about the DOT number before ordering----I figured I would cross that bridge when I was ready to actually order.

MY stock Michelins 1001 DOT have preformed flawlessly---no cracks etc; but it's time to say goodbye as we all know.

if you are a FMCA member, check out the benefit they offer thru Michelin for tires. I have the same size tires and I called this morning and the retail price is about $490 installed each. trying to find what the discount might be. i am also thinkging of switching the steel wheels and simulators for the Alum wheels, OUCH on that price, but they sure look nice.

with the correct RPM for each tire.

Buy Hankook! Stable, quiet and they run cool.
In my opinion every bit as good as the XZA2 that came off our coach.


It does boil down to care, weighing and proper pressure. Even the best tire doesn't stand a chance if its not taken care of!

Changed out my Michelin 255/70R 22.5 with Toyo 154 size 265/75 22.5. Almost same dia. and width. Excellent ride and service. simpletire.com has the Toyo's on sale now for 276.95 each plus shipping but have to be shipped to local installer who will charge for mounting. Will buy Toyo's again when needed.

I went from the OEM 255/80R22.5 LRG tires on my 2005 Vectra to 275/70R22.5 LRH ones. The diameter is almost the same, although I did have the ECM tweaked to slightly to make it exact.
