Not much power and blowing smoke
Good afternoon,
Just returned from a weekend at the track and made the tow home with
no issues. Went to dump the tanks and on the way back home my RV
2001 Journey diesel pusher started having issues. It would start to buck
a little like it was having problems getting fuel. Seems to be less of an
issue if I went slow but as soon as I stepped on the gas it would start
to blow smoke and would barely run. Made it back home and now I
need to find somewhere to take it to have someone look at it..Any
ideas on what might be causing the issue?

What color smoke? Another possibility might be a stuck exhaust brake.

Thats funny you mentioned the color of the smoke and exhaust brake. I was using the exhaust brake quite a bit the last few days and the color
of the smoke is blue. I just started the RV in the driveway and it starts
fine, idles fine and even if I give it gas it doesn't indicate any problem.
Thanks for the feed back. I will also check the fuel filter......

Fuel filter(s) are always the first thing to try. You really can't check the fuel filter without changing it and cutting the old one open.
If it is idling OK in the driveway with no load that is typical of a bad fuel filter. Put a load to it and the fuel cannot flow through the filter fast enough.

If it is a diesel could be the turbo. Check your oil. If it is a turbo it can pump the oil out of the crankcase thru the turbo. ??

I don't believe that plugged fuel filters would make a diesel engine smoke.........if anything, the plugged filters would starve the engine for fuel.
Diesel Smoke tells YOU a Story…
Sounds turbo related and the lack of power comes from no boost.

On a different motorhome the air filter became water logged because of heavy rain. Exhaust smoke was extremely dark and power dropped significantly. That was a 6.5 GM diesel.

The 2001 Journey 32T should have the 5.9L Cummins ISB engine, according to the 2001 Journey Brochure. I recall that some Cummins engines use a variable pitch turbo to perform the same function as a separate exhaust brake, but I don't know if that true in this case.

Well, a lot of good thoughts on what might be causing the problem. I am going to see
if I can drive it about twenty miles to the repair center. If not it will be my first use
of Coach-net road side service. Thanks for all your responses.

Is there any oil moisture in your exhaust pipe?? If so could be another sign it could be the turbo. If be chance it's a turbo it is not a good idea to run the motor.

I did not notice any oil moisture in the exhaust pipe when I parked it in the driveway or any on the driveway to the street.

I had similar problem and it turned out to be a loose connection on an injector.

Reply on blowing smoke, etc.
I had a 36 ft. winnebago journey that had a similar sort of issue without the blowing smoke description. I barely had enough power to make it from one spot to another. The issue was a throttle position sensor. Repair was in range of $250.00 at a cat facility in Florida.

I had a similar issue without the blowing smoke problem. My lack of power in the 2004 Journey that I owned turned out to be a throttle position sensor. It cost about 250.00 at a cat facility for the repair.

Ok, I have been searching the Cummins posts here and I keep reading about the same problem I am having and they talk about Lift pumps and Injector pumps being the problem. Does that sound like it could be the issue I am having? They also talk about "Codes" is that something the shop can check or is it something I can view on the
engine somewhere like the Onan generator has?

Just wanted to pass along an update on what happened this past weekend since everyone was kind enough to offer some suggestions. I opened up the engine area
and did a visual. Did not see anything obvious that could be causing the problem. I
decided to start it up and drive in around staying close to the house. I did not have
any problems at all....Someone mentioned that the Exhaust Brake could have been
sticking and maybe that was all it was. I am planning to take it to have the oil changed and I will have them check things out, change fuel filters, etc.

Just saw your thread. I have a very good friend who has your exact coach, 2001 Journey 32 T side hall, private bath. He had your exact problem last fall. It would start & idle ok but when called on for power just would not run. Somewhat sporadic at first but got worse. Long story short, it was a failing lift pump. If this condition goes on too long it will cause the injector pump to fail also and that is considerably more expensive.
Have someone test the lift pump.

Had the same type of symptom but without the smoke and with a Cat😖. Turned out to be a failing Heui pump.
