The biggest thing causing the appearance of the arms being damaged when fully retracted was that the canvas awning was uneven, being 6” farther forward on the roller compared to the top retainer. Once I slid the canvas back into Aligned position the arms Fully retracted correctly

EJG Thanks for letting us know all is good now, as far as the material sliding on your Awning arms I had a similar problem and it would move on a fairly regular basis so I centered material and put self tapping screws on the ends to stop it from sliding it solved that problem for me.
Glad your so called Snr moment wasn't so serious.
