We are thinking of adding a portable freezer to our motorhome. Do you have any experience/opinions/or thoughts about them?

When I bought my Horizon it came with a washer/dryer which I traded for a portable fridge. It has saved my bacon on more than one ocassion when the Norcold died. Have used it many, many times and would be lost without it. Does take up space but I carry too much junk as it is.

We have an 80 lb portable freezer and would be lost without it. We can carry enought for meals for about 2 months counting the coach freezer. Ours runs on 115 VAC and 12 VDC and can be set for temps between +40 and minus 10 degrees.

I'd like to know the brand and where to buy the 110/12v freezer mentioned. Sounds like a great idea.

We have a freezer/refrigerator (it can be either or) depending on where you set the temp. It is in the basement on the slide out storage tray, passenger side, and came with our 05 Horizon. We use it may times, more often as a freezer. It runs on 110 or 12 volt. We love it.

Ours is a Norcold. I believe it's made for Norcold by a German company that also private labels for other companies. They are available at a lot of places.
The one we have draws about 7 amps on DC and works well. It was a gift from my SIL who used it in her TT for many years and it's still going strong at about 25 years of age.
One thing to note, if you put it in an enclosed area you will need to vent the heat in some way according to the manual that came with ours.

Look your rig over and see where it will fit and where you can get both 110 and 12 volts. Mine is on a roll out and is the 80 pound Norcold model which is fairly large. They do make smaller ones which should be more than adequate. The roll out is needed as the lid can't be raised. while in a bin.

We removed the 2 chairs in the rear of coach. We put in a small chest 110V. Haier freezer. You know the kind you can buy for less than $150. It stays froozen inside when traveling. It has gone 2 days without having power with no problem. The wife loves the extra freezer space.

We also have a small (1.7 ?) cubic foot Haier in the basement. It is only 110 volt but as previously mentioned it will hold temperature for several days. We love it and use it on every trip.Only approxemently $150.00.

Oh wow! $150? That's a no brainer, then.
I guess I don't want one of those Engles because they are over $500!
Thanks for the suggestion.

Are these freezers available at the big box stores? Sounds like a heck of deal.

Wal-Mart is offering several compact freezers for under $300. One, a 1.3cf model is $139. and under 20" x 20" x 21" high. Should fit under dinette table.

Anyone know what the wattage requirment for the 1.3 Haier freezer is? And was wondering if it will run on modified sine wave inverter power?

I know nothing about electricity but I found this on one of the websites. I don't see anything on wattage but volts and amps are mentioned. Probably no help but I thought I'd post it anyway.

This is the model http://shop.bjs.com/Haier-3-5-...543962VVviewprod.htm I bought a couple of years ago. The smallest chest style & cheapest I could find. Less than $150 delivered from Circuit City at the time. A chest type loses less cold when opened than a front open freezer.

In our previous TT we had a small dorm refrig/freezer, a GE about 3ft tall. Ran it just fine on a 300watt inverter I bought at Target.
We didn't dry camp much then, but it kept it cold while on the road.

Here is an otion that you might want to consider. Fridge/Freezer it is the same pice and size, if you dont need the freezer space you can use it as a fridge. It also has a lock to secure the door while traveling down the oad. I have bought many things from here, my icemaker, and most recently my wine cooler. This will be my next purchase after TV upgrades.

Thanks for the link Lenny, looks like just what I have been looking for. The temperature setting feature from fridge to freezer would be ideal for my purposes. I may just buy one.
