Removing the "J" couch

I am trying to decide if I want to remove the J couch and install a recliner in the space.
The coach is an Ultimate Advantage 40J floor plan.

My greatest concern is can I get the couch out the door. I know the passenger seat must be removed.

Is it possible to break down the couch to smaller sections?

I hope by changing I can increase the comfort level and allow the passenger seat to be rotated.
Suggestions and directions will really help in this decision
Thanks

Removed Flexsteel couch

I removed the Flexsteel JackKnife couch from the slideout in my Newmar Bay Star. I had to remove the two end supports from the couch. Only 2 or 3 lag bolts on each end. Once you do this, fold out the couch to make it flat. It should fit through the door.

I put two small LZ-Boy recliners in the slideout. Lost the bed capability, but much more comfortable for lounging. The jacknife couch makes a poor bed and a worse place to sit for any length of time.

If i need a bed for an occasional visitor, I put a twin sized air bed on the floor.
A pain to walk around, but it works.

Good luck.

Jerry

The J couch used in the Ultimate series will not fold out/flat.It is designed for passenger use when driving, ie: seatbelts, so it is solid. It has a drawer in it too. Best of my knowledge it has to go out via the windshield.

I will do some more investigating, removing the windshield is not an option. Since the couch is very nice piece of furniture I really no not want to destroy it by cutting it into pieces.

Thanks for the replies

Think I saw this on another forum??? As indicated there, we don't have the J-couch but I think ours is called Banquet. Ours has a drawer under it. I have had ours out twice to be recovered.

I remove the drawer. Lying on the floor I then remove the 4 nuts holding the upper part to the lower metal frame. (the two upholstered end panels pop off). I remove the door hinge pin so the door can open wider, then the upholstered part of the couch w/o the metal frame on the bottom will go past the co-pilot chair and out the door. The metal frame is attached to the floor with 10 screws (5 on each end), and it also will easily fit out the door.

Measure the height and width of the couch - then the window above it. My J couch fit through that window - had to have a couple of helpers but better than disassembling it or removing a windshield.

Thank you for the reply. I thought of a few ways but did not think of the window above.

AFChap, thank you for your info

Couch dis-assembly

Have you called Winnebago Customer service? They should be able to tell you how to dis-assemble your couch. I would bet money that they brought the couch in through the main entry door. ( it was probably in pieces )

Or call customer service of the company who made the couch.

Regards,

Jerry

After making many measurements and guesses I decided to tackle removing the "J" couch.
The job turned out to be much easier than I thought.
First I removed the 2 drawers to expose the floor under the couch.
The couch has a steel frame anchored to the floor with 9 phillips head 1/4" wood screws. Once removed I tilted the couch to expose the 4-3/4" nuts holding the body to the frame.
Using the passenger seat turned to the side it was easy to remove from the coach through the entrance door.
I expect the gas furnace to perform better since the return grille opening is now fully exposed. The couch cover 2/3rds of the opening, now clear.
thanks to all who replied to my original post.
