We have a similar problem. Our original black Power Solera awning has been used app. 50 times and can been looked through in various spots. Must be rather cheap awning fabric ...

One can buy universal awning fabrics for RV.

As I remember from terrace awnings, one quality strait is the thickness.
200 / 400 Grammys / 14 ounces per square ... and so on.

Any experiences from people who have changed the awnings fabric?

Replaced both slide toppers with Tough Top Awnings (360.980-0537). Heavier mat'l than the original Carefree, but both have had problems with UV rot in the stitching (that's what your photo looks like). We winter in AZ and the stitching eventually rots and totally pulls apart. This time I tried coating the stitching with superglue to help prevent it from pulling out.
Tough Top is extremely easy to deal with. Watch the You Tube videos on replacing slide toppers and use the discount code shown.
You can do the job yourself - with the help of at least 2 people, bit it ain't the easiest. Lotsa grunt!
