Tag Axle...and braking while "dumped"
In two campgrounds now, I have observed my tag axle tires locking up while the "tag dump" condition was in effect. In both situations, I was driving down a slight incline on the campground's gravel road, thus I was applying the brakes to keep my speed low. The tag tires lock up (stop turning), and thus these tires begin "plowing" the gravel road...creating a nasty rut in the road. Seems to me that with "tag dump" in effect, the braking on these tires should be nullified. Thoughts?

I frequently dump my tag at slow forward in CGs and use brakes - have not experienced any drag. It would seem that the tag pressure is decreased so dragging / locking up shouldn't happen.
I suggest a call to Freightliner (1-800FTLHELP) - the techs may provide some good info to work with...
Let us know what results - we all learn...

It is possible that the brakes on the main axle are not applying properly. That would make the, lighter loaded tag axle, do more of the braking and skid.
My first suggestion is to take it out on an empty road, get it up to 50 mph and do a few hard stops to burnish the brake shoes.
To often we are too gentle with braking, using engine brakes and down shifting to slow and they need some hard stops.
You may find that the brakes will be more responsive and not skid the tag.
If not, get the brakes checked by a goid brake shop.

Weird, I just noticed it today on my 2016 Ellipse as well. Seemed to be only the passenger side from what I could see in the dirt...hmmmm

I can only speak for mine. Yep...does the same.
It makes sense in that the breaking pressure on the tag does not change, however the weight exerted on the ground is much less when dumped.

Mine also locks the tag tires up solid. Leaves a trench in the driveway too.

What Selah said is accurate. The brakes apply the same pressure, and with tag dumped the tag wheels will lock up plowing furrows in gravel when braking moving forward or braking backing down. I had to back downhill on a gravel drive in a previous house. The solution was don't let the auto dump feature kick in when in reverse!
