Zamp Solar Control

Hi, Getting our 2021 Winnebango Era ready for 6 mo. storage and I noticed that the when I shut off the house batteries the solar control still has power. There is no on/off button on the control, only a red light showing me there is still powered. Any thoughts?
Thanks

You should be able to download the wiring diagram from Winnebago.
But as far as I know, most Solar controllers are directly hooked up to the battery from the solar panels. The only way to shut it off is disconnect the solar panels. But I would not do that. The whole purpose of having solar is to maintain the batteries, even during the storage period. The Chassis disconnect switch shuts off output from the batteries NOT input.
Just let it be that is what it is designed to do, charge the batteries.

Good advice above unless you are storing inside, or in deep shade. Controller may become a parasitic load.

Zamp Control

Thanks for the replies, The rig is going into a storage bldg with no windows or lights or electric. I just put it in storage today and I unpluged the solar panels from the distribution hub on the roof and there doesn't seem to show any power/lights on the Zamp Control mounted on the inside wall. I guess I'll find out in April 22 if there was an issue. Thanks

There is no shut off. Nor is one needed. Which is why one is not installed from the factory.

The Zamp controller is a smart charger and will only charge your batteries as needed. If there is no sun to power the controller it just lies dormant. It's connected to your house batteries but not a load on those batteries.

Just be sure to turn off the house and chassis battery disconnects before going into storage. If storing in a building checking the batteries every month isn't a terrible idea and neither is disconnecting the house batteries after you make sure they are fully charged.

The red light indicates something is consuming or producing power. It may be power from the solar panel. In the dark, the red light may go out.

Storing lead acid batteries disconnected:
  • Fully charge batteries for 14 to 18 hours. This is necessary to remove all the lead sulfate from the plates.
  • Disconnect the batteries.
  • Monitor the battery terminal voltage periodically. Voltage should start above 12.7 volts.
  • Fully recharge 14 hours before battery voltage drops below 12.4 volts. Storing at lower voltages may cause loss of capacity. The lower the voltage, the more the loss.
  • You will get a "feel" for how long your battery bank can go without charging. Flooded cell batteries in good condition often last for 6 months. AGM batteries often last for 12 months.
