05 Essex another electrical question.

Going from Montana to Arizona last fall my alternator was failing to charge my house batteries. They went completely dead on one leg of the trip. I had lead core batteries then and one was definitely bad. I've since replaced them with AGM's but we've been hooked up to shore power since Dec. I know there's a "bird" that's supposed to control the alternator charging the house batteries. How does one check to see if the house batteries are being charged by the alternator and, and if they're not, what needs to be done?

Locate the Bird relay and check that both large terminals show the same voltage on your multi-meter with the engine running ( may take a couple of mins if the chassis batteries are low.

OR, using the in coach battery voltage display , turn it onto, read house battery voltage after the engines been running for 2 mins.

Info on the system , in this file . Both the control box and relay are on the back wall of my power cable bay ( your's may be covered by a panel .

I would highly suggest installing a quality meter/shunt like the TriMetic by Bogart or some other one.

Most often these are installed as part of a solar system. It's truly a fuel input/output gauge for your batteries.
