Great write up, John. Let me chime in with my thanks.

This thread points out to me something that I have thought about again and again and again. Namely that these things are just complicated beasts. No matter how carefully we think we are maintaining them and doing what we need to to keep them safe and secure, things like salt get to them and bring about the very problems and complications you mention.

Add to that the many things that all have to work together at the very same time in order to move 50,000 pounds to 65-70 mph, and it's a wonder how often it all does work together so smoothly. But, for the most part, it does. This is, hands down, the best motor home we have ever owned and we just love everything about it.

So many of you guys are good with mechanical things -- you, Steve Morrison, Ma Snart, Redbaron, Mr. D, 007, and a host of others whose wisdom I have listened to over again and again and again. There is some of this that you can get by listening carefully and keeping your mouth shut as I try hard to do, but some of it is just beyond someone like me who is totally non-mechanical. So what it means at the end of the day is that these are just complicated gizmos which have the problems they have and we just have to deal with them. And despite all of that, there is no question that like you, I just love this stuff. I am so glad that we bought our '13 Dutch Star -- despite the glitches and the complexity. This machine is simply a marvel of engineering wonder and when everything is in sync -- frankly most of the time for us -- it is just heaven on eight wheels. The power, the quiet, the smooth, the fun, the comfort, the ease and fun of driving it and passing all the trucks -- wow!

Tonight at Newmar while waiting for DW to come out tomorrow, I am, as my Dad used to say, "snug as a bug in a rug" in this beautiful 4018. Tunes are going on Pandora, the coffee is strong and smooth, the sunset was great out the front windshield facing west and I am on the computer with my favorite pastime -- cruising the Newmar Owners' Forum.

Tell me when it gets better!

Ditto to Steve's comment: Very much looking forward to the Hoots get together in five weeks.

Deek

Good job PDRJohn like Deek said you have some complicated machinery under your feet and no matter how careful and gentle you are things will happen.
As far as salt my coach never saw it until we took a trip to Nappanee in Jan 2010 than to FL. and back to Nappanee than home in FEB.
Took wife to FL. for one last time before her operations.
Every compartment lock frozed could not open locks, starter would not turn over engine and wipers one speed.
Plenty of PB Blaster use sand paper, pulled the starter and cleaned up and forgot just had to replace a HWH jack the cylinder casing was leaking fluid.
Still working on wipers.
If you can do it avoid the winter roads its not good for under carriage of your motor home.

Has Newmar quit installing the sewer hose holder in the sidewall like ours has?

I drove ours from Vancouver, WA to Nappanee in March of 2004 so I couldn't avoid some of the snow. No sign of excess rust on the rig even now. I suppose I should grab the can of Rust Reformer and root around underneath.

I am starting to have more rust show up than I like to see and have it on my list for Nappanee in November when I get back up there. But after reading this … I might start hitting the worst spots myself while I wait for the November appointment.

Have picked up on the following products and am now am not sure what to get?

· converter
· Dupli-Color Rust Fix
· T9 Bioshield
· Rust Bullet
· salt away
· rust inhibitor
· PB Blaster
· Rust Reformer

I plan to get some wire brush tools and start this weekend. Any recommendations on what “can of stuff” I need to get to use once I get the metal cleaned up???

Steve

Your coach and mine were built by Spartan. Sounds like the new coaches on Freightliner are having the problem. During my factory tour last fall, I did not see where Newmar paints the chassis.

so far the rust bullet has worked the best. Applied it in the spring no signs of pitting or any bubles. Just wire brush the area remove the lose stuff and apply the product.

Nice report John.

Some nice ideas to consider for our rig too.

Thanks for posting.

Steve, interesting your seeing that much. After you wire brush/wheel everything clean, use the converter/rust fix then paint.

I was just linked to this stuff from old car restorers:Miracle Paint Rust Killer-Hirsch Automotive Products

This winter I'm going to try it on my Wrangler frame to see how it works. The liquid deicer has done a number on it.

I forgot to mention the alternator and AC compressor housings took a lot of clean up.

I also bought a spare idler pulley, just in case.

No, it's still there. The ends of my sewer hose will not fit in it.

Do you think that on an ordered new coach that you could get the factory to paint the chassis with a high grade corrosion resistant paint as a custom option?

I use the Blue Line fittings (CW carries them) and they go in just fine. Slip joints but be sure you push them together well enough. I didn't last weekend and the grey water flush blew one apart with the resultant Robin Williams "RV" moment!

Does not seem like there should be that much rust on '13s, especially if they have not seen northern winter roads. Since Newmar apparently does not apply any protectant to the chassis, do they apply any undercoating?

Steve's surprised me.

Mine saw to much winter roads. I had salt growth almost an inch thick on the radiator and inside the genny housing.

Everywhere Newmar spayed their undercoating was just fine. The metal that they added for supports had all the coating ate off. Bare aluminum got it real bad as well.

The Freightliner parts seem fine, but anything welded to it a painted had the paint eaten off.
