2002 MADP Replace Slide Rollers

Over the past year our slides started making a popping sound when bringing it in or out. Was not sure exactly what was causing it and always forgot to check closer when back home. Then one day this week as I was bringing slide in I noticed a ball bearing on floor then realized where all the popping was coming from. Quick look underneath and sure enough rollers were shot.

Below is the process I used to change them out took about 30 minutes to swap them all out.
1st is move slide most the way out and prior to rollers dropping down ramp.
Then with a 4-5’ 2x4 or 2x6 placed under slide where the roller being worked on is at. Use as a lever and lift the slide slightly placing blocks on each side. Only need about 1/2” clearance to swap.

Next while elevated determine which way shaft needs to move to remove. They are spring loaded and you push to one side to remove. I had seen someone mention vise grips but did not follow exactly what they did. What I did was place vice grips on opposite side you would push and pull the shaft out with a screw driver as a small lever. This makes it super simple for removing and reinstalling.

Once removed the extent of wear was obvious. The outer 2 rollers were both completely shot. The middle 2 rollers were ok but I replaced them all. 19 years was long enough for them to carry that weight. Slide moves in and out without any popping now!

Yes, they were sourced from Newmar. Called them with SN and they fixed me up with correct part number $25 each and free shipping. Had them next day.

Nice documentation Steve. I had mine done at the factory in 2019 as part of my service trip there. I was told I needed to replace mine with the new "white" rollers - the ones you show are not white IMO but maybe in theirs?

The white with hexagon shafts are used on the heavier slides. Mine are grey with the round shafts.

I use the wood at the top of the slide trick. Move the slides inward while the block keeps the top from closing. The bottom continues to close and the inside floor then angles up which takes all the weight off of all the rollers. This is the method that Newmar recommends. I also put blocks of wood under the slide an ontop of the floor like Spk64 has to ensure the slide isn't going to drop no matter what.

It takes a LOT of pressure to lever lift the slide. And that's a lot of pressure on one point of the slide floor and the finished floor underneath.

Another trick is to put a towel under the block that touches the finished floor to minimize scratch potential.

I need to remove the rollers on mine to change to a lower profile model to account for the thicker finished floor I redid. Another project...

Spk64 gets me thinking of lots of projects!

Another great job and documentation!

It looks like I am on the finished floor but actually lifting back quite a ways. It lifted fairly easy. I did start to do the wood block on top but felt the lever and small lift was less stress on everything.
