2003 DSDP Stepwell Linear Actuator Bad

I have a 2003 DSDP. The step cover linear actuator was replaced under warranty in 2005. It stopped working again late last year and I did not bother looking at it – it was in the down position and I was unable to lift the steps to access the mechanism.Today I decided to tackle it - the actuator is bad. The current installed actuator is Duff-Norton, Model #LM100-1-S2, which is no longer available.I did locate an actuator on Amazon (of all places) that may be a suitable substitute, but I have a couple of questions regarding its specifications.

The current actuator has a stroke of 125mm (4.9 inches). The one located on Amazon has a stroke of 6 inches. The specifications indicate it has a built-in clutch to prevent over-extending and over-compressing, so it should not create problems.Additionally, the operation of the steps is controlled by the dash switch, so I should be able to limit its movement just in case.

Comments, suggestions, thoughts; I have not ordered it yet.

John

You could change the mounting location in relation to the extended length.

As Tom says, relocating the mount is easy to do and will solve your problem in that regard.
When mine failed, I tried buying from Norton but they said it was proprietary to Newmar and so I bought one from them. Expensive....
When mine failed the gearbox actually came apart by pulling the screws out of the housing. My guess is it was underrated for the weight.
Anyway, I was missing the small sun gear because I think the OP tried to fix it and lost the gear. So when I installed the new one, I fabricated a bracket to strengthen the housing. After 6+ years it's still works fine.
You may want to consider something like this for yours depending on the weight rating of the new one.

Thanks for your replies. I noticed a common thread on those replies contained in the links supplied by 007 – the actuator motor was damaged in some form or fashion, and that is why I had to have it replaced in 2005 – the motor came apart due to the screws pulling out of the back plate.Mine is dead - I have 12v at the motor.Looking at a couple of the “fixes”, I think the addition of some reinforcement to the motor body will prevent the additional stroke of the new actuator from pulling itself apart. Not certain I can relocate the actuator attachment points; not much room under the steps and the design of the mounting fixture would seem to prevent any inexpensive modification.

Thanks again; I’ll follow up after I replace the actuator.
