Hey Folks, just put some earnest money down on this rig and we are very excited! Our FIRST DP!!!

Quite a learning curve coming up since our current rig is a 1997 RexAir 32 feet with NO SLIDES!! (So to be clear, going from a 32' - 17K lb rig to a 45' - 44K lb rig....gulp...no worries, right?)

We've been living in the RexAir for 1.5 years and our ballet that happens when we pass each other was turning into a roller derby event, so this new to us purchase is timely.

So LOTS of questions but my pressing one is this...We will be flying to Asheville, NC to pickup the rig on the 26th of June and it needs new tires. I called a couple of the local shops there and NO ONE has or can get TOYO's for this rig, 315/80R 22.5.

The tires are not cracked nor do they have any dry rot, but they're approaching the 7.5 to 8 year mark and I don't want to drive 2500 miles back to Spokane on questionable tires. (I believe they are Michelins which I don't want)

Does anyone know of a shop either in Asheville or westbound that does a good volume of tires so I know I'll get 'fresh' ones? Or, perhaps someone can recommend an online store that will ship to a shop nearby that will be amenable to installing them? (So need the store and shop info)

And while we're on the topics of tires, has anyone with these big rigs used the Hercules product...315/80R22.5 Hercules Strong Guard? I have the H-901's on my gas rig but have no idea if these are highly regarded in the RV world. Any input is appreciated.

So yeah...this is my 1st post of MANY once we get the rig and start learning the intricacies. I'm wide open for suggestions on how to prepare myself for the 2500 mile trip coming up. I've test driven a couple of 42 footers but I have a feeling this 45er might be a much different experience!

Thanks in advance for all the brain trusts knowledge. I rely on you all a LOT!

Would suggest joining FMCA so you can take advantage of their tire program which is with both Michelin and Continental which both having the 315 tires. You can check out the pricing by going to their web site and look at the details of their tire program. They can put you in contact with the many truck tire dealers in hundreds of locations.

I had a knowledge friend ask me and since Iím in the process of buying I thought I should ask.

TIA

Yes, thank RevRoy, I also just checked that, and contacted the current owner as well to just double check. Didn't make sense to me, but since this DP stuff is all new to me I thought I had better ask.

So, now onto figuring out how to get tires. Did you know there's a tire shortage? According to numerous tire shops I've called out in NC that's what they're telling me. Even Jeff Brown at Motorhometires.com said that. But here in Spokane, WA when I called our local Les Schwab store they said they can get 8 tomorrow. Strange. I just wish I could get them in NC! Oh, and I'm talking about Toyo's, although I'm open to other tire recommendations, just not Michelin or Goodyear.

Thanks!

Congratulations on your new coach! Excellent choice.

I agree. You can check FMCA pricing without joining, but many times they will save you the cost of membership.
https://fmca.com/rv-tires-discounts
Roll down and select "Get a quote".

I would also check Simple Tire online. They have great pricing on 315/80R-22.5 Toyo tires and will ship free to your installer.
https://simpletire.com/brands/toyo-t...&curationPos=1

I would avoid Goodyear as well as the Michelin XRV model tires. Michelin Energy are great but expensive. Continental are some of the best but also expensive.

So how does that work with the on-line ordering? I went there and found a good price, but they said they weren't any installers in that area (Asheville, NC). When I contacted Jeff at Motorhometires.com he said they have installers there but he couldn't promise that he had enough Toyo's in the area. He also said the date code could vary 3 to 6 months....that seems like a lot to me...you?

Also, Jeff said they use 'beads' for balancing and I don't think I want that as I will be using a TPMS system and I 'believe' I've heard those beads will cause problems.

I'm thinking a shop with a high-speed balancer is what I want, right? But WHERE do I find out between Asheville, NC and Spokane, WA...there's GOT to be some that have Toyo's right?

You know, I'm thinking I might go start another thread just about tires, models, prices, and places to get them installed. Not sure I should do that here.

I've been using balance beads with with a TPMS for several years.
Just find another convenient location with an installer.

I retired from a tire manufacturer who made truck tires and can explain the 3-6 month spread on dates. Tires are manufactured by size and specs in lots, say 20000 at a time, so they aren't made to order but are stored. Add to that the distance from the distribution location. So an age spread like that does happen.
As far as balancing, many RVers use Centramatic Wheel Balancers just like the trucking industry. If you have a tire changed on the side of the road it won't need to be balanced.
