2006 Essex Radio Upgrade

I really needed my Bluetooth and USB audio sources. Here's how I went about the upgrade.... after being quoted outrageous pricing at the car audio shop.

Here is the original radio behind the wood grain panel. Not much mounting support.

Also displayed is the all important Metra 99-4544 dash kit.

Lastly, I am showing the selected parts; flat face plate and the body. The 3 round pieces are 1/2 inch (or so) grommets to improve support.

This photo shows the radio cage inserted into the dash kit. The radio cage is held in by pressing down the metal tabs. The dash kit works, but I wanted more support so I added the grommets to support the radio within the large (and much stronger) plastic cage. The grommets are a glued to the plastic and hopefully prevent the radio from bouncing around too much.

These photos show loose assembly. Just to make sure everything will fit as planned.

The kit (if it had instructions) probably does not require any glue, but I want a bomb proof install, so I used super glue to attach the face plate to the body.

A few more detail photos. A picture of the harness (I preserved the fuse that was already there).

Also a couple of final assembly and mounting photos.

But wait! There's more!

I also upgraded the outdoor radio as well. Pretty much the same process. I used the protruded face plate to insert into the mounting hole. I drilled some holes to mount the dash kit with machine screws. I had to add a couple of spacers to get proper tension and support.

And the last few photos.

A really blurry picture for your viewing pleasure and the final photo.

I didn't include a shot with the TV as the TV is really dirty and showing it would discredit all my work.
