If that's the book adding zero options, then that would be a good deal. I like to buy under low book.

I also have an 06 Essex. Here are the facts of how our coaches depreciate. An 06 Essex retailed for just over $500,000 or a bit more with options. That was in late 2005. That means the invoice (wholesale) price that the dealer paid was about 68% of retail or about $340,000. So the first year price for a used 06 Essex was about 90% of that number (If a dealer could get a new one for $340,000 they would pay you less for a nearly new one.)

If the coach depreciated 10% per year, when the 2014 models are out (now) the wholesale would be about $150,000. That is a 10% per year depreciation, when in fact some years they probably depreciates more like 15%. So a dealer will probably allow about $135,000 to $150,000 on a trade in for an 06 Essex - of course if they don't discount the new coach you buy as much, they will allow more for trade. But the facts are they are really buying in for the "depreciated value".

This math gives you an idea what a coach such as an 06 is worth. Retail obviously will be a bit more that wholesale, but certainly not much over $150,000.

I have confirmed this math with two friends who were sales managers at large RV dealerships. As much as I hate to say it, that is all it is worth.

I agree with $150k, but just as important as price, have they done the fan belt fix?

The NADA RV guide is available on-line. Just Google "NADA RV". I just did a quick look at the 2006 Essex 41 footer (helps to know the model number) and NADA lists it at $216,000 to $261,000 with no options. This is the same guide the dealers use to start their pricing. The internet version shows retail, not wholesale (Dealer costs) prices.

If you use the Guide a couple of things to be aware of. On the "Motorhome Manufactures" page Newmar is in the drop down menu next to the "Don't see your manufacture" line. When you get to the "Equipment and Prices" page, only check items that are true Options. Don't select a MW, Awning, AC, Refrig, etc if it came standard. NADA has already included these items and checking them again inflates the price. Have fun.

It really doesn't matter what any guide says or what percent per year of depreciation you want to use its worth as much as you can sell it for in today's market

And I sure haven't seen many Essex coaches in that year for 150 just saying

Steve,

Agree with you, it really doesn't matter what a guide says. But seeing a guide at well over $200,000 is misleading. Knowing wholesale (what a dealer paid on trade) helps a buyer make a reasonable offer. Since the dealer has "all the information" it behooves a buyer to be informed, so not to over pay.

Call Spartan with VIN to see if fan belt fixes were done. My 2007 MADP with Spartan K2 chassis had all the mechanical fan belt fixes and it was still hard on fan belts and very rough in high engine brake position. I had a tech deprogram the computer- so fan did not come on full during engine braking. The extra 35 hp of fan assist was just not worth the pain. Since reprogramming I have yet to find a grade that required the extra brake assist via fan. The Essex is a great coach and the price seeks fair. Do check the tire dates. With inspections the Michelin tires should be good for ten years, per manufacturer's recommendations.
