2006 Newmar Essex 45 Somerset

Greetings Newmar owners!

Looked at a used Newmar coach, as decribed in the title today. Liked it, clean, in good shape. Was just kicking tires so didn't get too detailed but now we are getting a little more serious.

While checking the tire dates, I observed the front steer tires had the outside edges scrubed, and could feel some cupping in the tire.

I remember sometime back, Newmar having issues with overloaded front axles. Were 2006 models part of that problem?

Also, any other thoughts on these? The 500 hp cummins and or the Spartan chasis?

Thanks for any input you can share.

The 2006 Essex is a good coach with a strong chassis. The only chassis issue is the EGR valve. This coach could have some worn out front end parts. This is not uncommon. The biggest issue is eplex, which can be overcome. Check my posts for details.

Thanks for the info.. I didn't climb under the unit, but I was thinking a 2006 unit wouldn't have a DPF? True? Not famliar wwith EGR's on these units, expensive to repair.

I looked at your Eplex post. Had to read it a few times, I think I get the idea. Do they all fail,,, or is it a common failure? I will check it out if we decide to pursue this futher.

Thanks!

My EGR was replaced for just under $2k while traveling. Around 75k miles.

EPLEX is a bunch of electronics that are aging out, with no support. Failure with a need to replace is a certainty.

No DEF on these engines.

Hey LLoyd .... that era had a ton of high-end features. As mentioned .... also a few warts. Along with the e-plex, you'll have a few upgrades you'll want to do. In all likelihood the sat system, 4 TV's, sound system, navigation, and lighting are obsolete. That's typical of a 10 year old coach. You may also need 3 new A/C units. I'd figure you are going to spend another $10K to make it "modern". For instance, my 2005 has new window shades, a new back-up camera, 4 larger TVs, 3 new A/C units, new dash receiver, bluetooth transmitters with headphones (In lieu of a conventional sound system), LED lighting throughout, and a bunch of normal maintenance items. Shortly I'll need awning material all around.

Thanks all for the shared data. We decided to pass on the coach, could not agree on the financials with the dealer.

They are beutiful coaches, if we see another may try again. Meanwhile going to keep running ours.

Thanks again!
