2008 Essex Spartan/Cummins Fault Code...
While on the road today the Check Engine Light activated, a fault code of:
MID 128 Engine,
PID 27 FMI 2
Source 0 Engine
SPN 27 FMI 2
It did disappear and then return after 10-15 minutes. When the engine was turned off it would also disappear, but then pop up again after driving for some time.
Put a call into Spartan, tech said it was related to the EGR valve, could be the actual valve/motor, sensor, wiring, among other things, but would need to contact Cummins for more specifics. Spoke with someone at Cummins in Albuquerque and confirmed it was EGR valve issue but a visit to the service center would be needed to diagnose the issue any further. Unfortunately they had no time today and had repairs scheduled out 3-4 days so I didn't stop there as I passed through ABQ.
Has anybody encountered this specific issue & fault, and if so, what was the solution.
My take is since there is no discernable performance degradation (valve stuck fully open, stuck fully closed, stuck in a partially open position), the valve is actually functioning, instead it is a bad sensor or something in the wiring. The other possible explanation is that it is sticking as it moves through its operating range, but frees up.

Addl Info...
From the Roadranger Fault Code Chart, for Cummins, shows the MID 128 / PID 27 / FMI 2 has a fault description of "EGR Position Sensor Circuit".

I had this problem last year. The valve was sticking as it transitioned. The tech had a software tool that graphed the valve position and showed me the plot graph. The sticking valve was only going to get worse. I believe this is a common egr valve failure. As my egr system was 11 years old with 76000 miles, I had it replaced. Freightliner charged me $1800.

That is unbelievable and borders on "price gouging".

Do you have a link to that chart? .... I keep coming up with Tranny Charts.

I have a document named 'Cummins ISM SPN Spartan Engine fault codes'. It has this code in it. Don't remember where I found it. Let me know if you need it.

Sign in to Cummins Quick Serve and you can get all the informative that is specific to your engine serial number. It explains the codes and even gives diagrams and part numbers for the exact code you are reading. The information you get is the same thing the Cummins guys get on their computers.

Thanks for Quick Serve suggestion. The detailed description on the fault code indicates erratic data from position sensor and it appears Cummins sells the sensor by itself. I may go down that road first since I was able to make the trip from KC to CA with no engine performance degradation, in fact the coach had more power going up hills.
I will post a follow-up once I obtain the part and perform the install.
Thank you for all the suggestions.
