No ignition key on is required, as well there are not normally any overriding switch. So, either the remote, the light assembly or the power to it are faulty. Best to seek help from your local dealer. Sorry I could not help more.

My '07 Essex certainly does require the key in the ignition and turned on aux. I just tested it to make sure I wasn't imagining it.

Does anybody really find them useful? We ordered one on our '00 DSDP and only used it a couple times. When we ordered the '02 DSDP we didn't get one and haven't missed it at all.

Years ago I had a gasser with one and used it, but with my Essex and the high sides on the roof making it useless on the sides and also having docking lights, yea I agree, fun toy but not very useful. It came with my Essex but at this point I'd never order it.
