2019 DS 4018 Compartment Door

Received new compartment latch from Newmar for my 2019 DS. Seems easy enough to replace the latch until I tried to remove the 2 screws that attach the latch to the compartment door. The screws are 8 point, and my 6 sided torques wrench tips in that size range are are either too big or too small. Attachment illustrates the screws. Away from the coach (Freightliner Service), has anybody used a square tip to do this job?

Interesting to see them on the doors! It’s called a double-square, or double Robertson for us Canadians. Lol. You can use a square (Robertson) bit in two separate positions on it. Or, you can always buy a box of headlock bolts from Home Depot. They come with a double-square bit (you’d have to check the sizing though).

Search for "Torx" on Amazon. They are becoming more common. Been around for a long time.

Here is another link

RV industry has been using them for 30+ years. Now the automotive industry is using them, especially German cars, so get a set of torx screwdrivers. They use them because they can put screws in with power tools without stripping the heads as often.

If your not going to be using them a lot. Harbor Freight carries an assortment pack at a reasonable price for 3/8 or half ratchet.

Torx are 6 points no? I think these are 8 from the OPís picture. It threw me off when I looked at first. I donít think a torx will work.

Yes, you are correct! I missed that. It is called a double square bit, also available on amazon, and probably Harbor Freight.

I have used the square bit and they work fine. Do not use a torques. Make sure the cable is tight when you are done.

Thanks for the responses, used a square #2 at Home Depot to remove the screws. Compartment door is back in service.
