2021 - 2022 Steering Recall -- All Diesel coaches affected

Newmar recently expanded the recall for the steering bolt to cover:

Motorhomes included in this recall include:
2021-2022 Ventana Motorhomes
2021-2022 Kountry Star Motorhomes
2021-2022 Dutch Star Motorhomes
2021-2022 New Aire Motorhomes
2021-2022 Mountain Aire Motorhomes
2021-2022 Essex Motorhomes
2021-2022 London Aire Motorhomes
2021-2022 King Aire Motorhomes

The full recall is available here:

https://newpar.newmarcorp.com/instan...s/BLTN580R.pdf

I strongly suggest that if you are driving, you perform the action listed in the repair document shown here:Click image for larger version

This is very easy to do to ensure your steering nut is not going to jam or fall out while you are driving your coach.

Even if you check it yourself, you will need to still go to a dealer to get the recall cleared. The reason you need to check for yourself is so that it does not cause a problem while you are enroute to your dealer. I have 1500 miles to drive before I get back to my dealer.

Thanks for posting this, RB. I was at the mothership last week for service and nothing was mentioned about this, nor was anything checked AFAIK. I now have a project for this afternoon.

I had been hearing about this for a while, but every time I checked my coach was not listed. Even doing the VIN search with NHTSA the recall is not showing up.

I was surprised to find the document that listed the newly expanded recall, and then a little bit scared when I realized the serious nature of this recall.

I know the picture of the bolt on the floor was an illustration of "worst case scenario", but that sure did get my attention!

My 4 hour trip to dealer Tuesday doesn’t sound so bad.

I asked Newmar if I could go to Freightliner (1 mile away) and of course was told no.

Get that in writing before you take a 4-hour trip.

Quick Check

Thanks to RedBarron73 for the detailed information! Like others, it will be a few miles before I can get it into a service center. Have a 2022 3736 that is 6 weeks old. Checked the bolts and they were already torqued to spec. Took less than 1 hr.

I have not received a recall notice. My VIN was not on the list. I checked my bolts myself-they were tight. Should I still expect a recall notice? To do a 500 mile round trip to a dealer just to check on one bolt that I can do myself seems like a pretty expensive check up. Maybe they should allow FL/Spartan to do the checks because most of us are already facing several recent recalls and they could reimburse FL/Spartan for the service-makes way more sense to me. Or send out a mobile tech to run around the country to perform this task. I know that Tesla does at home service calls all the time. BTW, I'm traveling through Canada right now and won't be back home for another few thousand miles so no can do for me even if I wanted to.

The reason this recall is only done by Newmar is because this particular coupler is disconnected and reinstalled by Newmar during the manufacturing process. It’s not a FL or Spartan responsibility.

I'm guessing my front-engine diesel Super C is not affected by this recall, but if anyone has reason to suspect otherwise please let me know.

You just need to worry about valve stems.

R.B., I assume you’re referring to this issue:

https://www.irv2.com/forums/f103/rec...er-568660.html

Fortunately, it appears I’m clean on that one. That recall affected various chassis products manufactured by Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC, or F-Triple-C as the Freightliner folks refer to it). Our Super Star was built on an M2-106 regional delivery truck cab & chassis, which is manufactured by mainline Freightliner rather than FCCC.

I just did a visual check anyway and found the valve stems for the inner drive tires nicely centered in their respective holes in the outer drive tire wheels – see photo below.

Thank you for the update RedBaron and instructions to fix! Our RV is on the list. I have not been notified by Newmar yet.

I will check and torque bolt/nuts as needed. Will bring to dealership later.

Thank you greatly for your post of how to diy. I spoke to Newmar yesterday and they would not share any of this info with me. This could be very serious for those with a loose nut. Too serious for Newmar to be more forthcoming on a possible diy check or repair
