Too much paint will cause internal stress on the coating over time and become brittle. This will result in cracking and delamination of the area that has excessive coating. At the coating ages it will continue to cure and lose plasticity and the ability to flex. Too much coating will increase the stress beyond what it was designed to handle.

This is why you should address runs in the clearcoat as soon as possible while the coating is still "green" from application.
This is inline with what I have been told and observed.

The other area is orange peel. It is wrong to have, but some detailer feel they can correct it easily. The problem with a detailer correcting it is they have to burn thru the Clear coat to polish it.

I have a paint meter. I use this to prove damage by paint detail efforts. These available for less than $100 on Amazon. This tool is also a good way to check the thickness of your ceramic coating if you get it.

I was shocked when we went to Nappanee and rode by the paint booth in our Jeep. Doors where open probably due to heat in June, but the entire area was limestone and dust clouds from workers moving coaches at a fast pace!

Probably the prep and clean up staging rooms. The booth I belive is a tunnel with oven. Still prep area should not be open to elements nor should more than one unit be in the prep area at a time.

Great Post RB!!!
This will be the first FPU with Newmar for me on Dec 6th. My others were with AC but this will be the first for my wife. She will be focusing on the interior( god help them, lol) I will be going over everything just like Ive done in the past.
Being a GC for the last 30 years I understand there’s no such thing as perfection but you do need to give the best product possible.
I think this topic will open a lot of eyes and keep Newmar at the top!!!

Thank you for understanding the spirit of this post--and yes, I do hope it will help educate the consumers.

I have done FPU 2 separate times. I have found the team involved willing to move mountains to make me happy. There is a certain point in which their abilities become limited, and you will have to work with them to find alternate resolution.

In 2018, I left my FPU with everything taken care of except for the paint swirls. I found it very hard to explain to my team and team lead what a paint swirl was, let alone get them to see it. They are not paint and body specialist.

If I was doing another fpu, and discovered a paint issue, I would ask to have a manager from the paint and body meet with me to discuss the paint.

There are a few other areas of the coach that are beyond the expertise of the service department crew, but nothing to the degree of paint and body.

In 2018, I had not thought of the fact that the techs and team leads working with me had no idea what I was talking about with paint swirls and micro scratches, and further, probably could not understand why I would care. They never made me feel that way, and really did try everything they could to fix the problem.

Good luck with your FPU!

Hello Red Baron,

You mentioned in your opening post that you would cover proper washing techniques in a future post. I am taking delivery of a new Dutch Star in December and now have a heightened awareness of the pre-cured clear coat dangers. I am anxious to read up on your thoughts. Have you posted that yet?

Also, I am curious on you opinion on the value of ceramic coatings on new paint. I am considering GlideCoat. I don't want to take this post off topic so perhaps a new string would be in order?

I am working on this post now...stay tuned. I will be putting this in a new thread.

Thank you very much for all the insightful information.

We have a DS 4369 ordered and it might be here in March. Could you point me in the direction to find a qualified inspector in the Atlanta area?

In your opinion do you think it is worth the extra cost for a factory delivery?

I was going to ask a similar question. Hoping for some recommendations on an inspector.

To find a qualified inspector, start here:

https://nrvia.org/locate/

Interview your inspectors and find one that has recent experience with your model coach. Ask for sample reports on the same model coach you are purchasing, and then review their findings.

Being nrvia certified does not imply quality, it is just the minimum standard you should insist on.

Every class has A students and D students. They all get the same degree. By looking at work samples you can find your A student.

NRVIA inspectors are like Home Inspectors...you have to perform your due diligence in the vetting/interview process and get a good gut feeling... I have gone behind many home inspectors and found critical issues they missed. I would suggest camping out on the dealer lot for a few nights when you take delivery to ensure you test everything in the coach multiple times. Even doing this some latent defects may not show up until after you have rolled down the road a few hundred miles.

The rep will want you to send the information and should confirm the receipt.

A follow up discussion to verify clarity of the issues would be a good idea.

The severity of your issues will dictate the next step. It might involve a service appointment at the factory, another dealer, or a mobile service. That will be something for you and your rep to discuss.

Do not expect an approval before you leave. Just expect a confirmation of clarity and submission of your items.

The most important item to address before leaving is the paint chips and swirls. After pulling out if the driveway, your case will be exponentially higher to prove.
Thanks redbaron73 ... this was exactly what I was looking for.
