3031 Engine code - DEF

Hello, I just recently got this code on my 19 DS Spartan:

3031 Aftertreatment 1 Diesel Exhaust Fluid Tank Temperature

Has anyone gotten this message and perhaps a resolution to it? Hope to get any help on this before stopping by a Cummins service center.

Great... Was this something that was replaced under warranty? If so, by whom? Did you get this replaced by a Cummins service center?

I had a similar issue with my 2019 DS Spartan. If you call Spartan, they will "diagnose" the issue over the phone using the code(s), and send out a new DEF head. I had the head shipped to and the work performed by a local Cummins service center. It is a warranty claim as it is part of the emissions system.

Thanks for the helpful info. I stopped at Cummins service center, had them run diagnostic to get codes, called Spartan and new DEF head is on the way arriving in 2 days.

This seems to be a common issue. Will replacing this part with a new one fix it or can we expect the replacement part to fail eventually in the future like the first one? Just wondering...

Just a response from reading about the DEF head issue.

On your 2019, a new head will probably fix the issue that was recorded, but the major issue with the head is with the sensor that detects DEF concentration. The concentration codes will put you into derating.

If the replacement head is marked "GEN 6", then there is a high likelihood that all things will go well from now on, but head failure in motorhomes of post-2016 vintage have been a problem.

The newest replacement DEF head is a Gen 7. Would be interesting to see if you get a Gen 6 or 7 head? Did they they need to clear the computer with a scanner?

Well,
Count me in. Just got a 3031 code an hour ago. Sparten said to keep on driving. There is nothing they do for just a 3031 code. I will follow this thread closely. Please post updates.
Thanks
Pat

I appreciate all of your responses. I will be heading out to the cummins service center in a bit to be in stand by for the delivery of the head. I will keep you all posted in regards to what generation head I receive.

All to common problem and it can leave you in derate. Some have said to go 300 + miles and some barely 100 miles.

There are many threads over on the Entregra forum with Def Head problems.

The replacement was a Gen 7. The install was a breeze, took less than 15 minutes, and the codes were cleared by the technician using their cummins equipment hooked into the green port below the steering wheel. I took pictures of the old header which didn't have any tags indicating what Gen it was but I can't seem to figure out how to upload the pictures to this thread via mobile.

I have not yet driven the RV as we were in the Cummins service center in Nashville TN so we decided to stop by Hattie B's to try their famous hot chicken.

@Turbojack, thanks for the link. I can't believe there hasn't been any mention of this issue in the Newmar forum. I searched and nothing came up using the 3031 code or Aftertreatment DEF wordings. I hope this thread will be of help to other Newmar owners that may come across this apparently common problem.

Newtotoro,
Was 3031 the only code you generated? Did your coach go into derate mode? Were there any other symptoms?
Thanks

When the tech from Cummins plug in the Spartan diagnostic device, it pulled the following 3 codes:

3868 Aftertreatment Diesel Exhaust Fluid Quality - 35 count - Inactive

4572 Aftertreatment 1 Diesel Exhaust Fluid Tank Temperature - 36 count - Inactive

4677 Abnormal Update Rate - 36 count - Inactive

There were no symptoms I could tell but I took care of this right away, and only drove approximately 150 miles to Nashville from the time the warnings came on.

Edit: I was finally able to upload the pictures...
