'99 Dutch Star model 3865 exterior paint

Any thoughts or suggestions on a paint job/re-striping the exterior of our Dutch Star? We really love our coach and take meticulous care of it but the brutal AZ sun has really done a number on it. Anyone know cost of full paint with stripes or cheaper to go decals as original? Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated!

Rattle cans in Mexico, maybe a few $1,000. Good shop in the US, maybe $10,000 for a full paint job and extra for clear coat.
Redo the decals: one side from Newmar was around $3,000 on our 2000 3865 in 2001.
Standard Newmar full body paint, maybe $20,000 up.
One like what we have on the present rig: I wouldn't even hazard a guess!

Hello folks,

Check this company out. They do great custom work and paint coaches for several companies as well. You can study the before and after photos, and they'll do anything you want. Give 'em a call. I realize they're not close to you, but it's worth it I would say. Or as Mr D suggested, I second talking to Newmar too. They're not far from each other, get the best quote of the two. Best of luck to you!

My rig was painted about 6 years ago by a shop in Arizona (Apache Junction area). Cost was just over $22K. There are no decals, all striping is paint (5 colors + clear coat). All badging was removed and not replaced. You wouldn't know it was a DS unless you knew what you were looking at.

Hi Stargazer79,
Consider having the moderators move this thread to the Newmar Owners Forum. The NKK Forum is for NKK events and conversation. You will get much better exposure in the Newmar Owners forum.

A good full body 4 or 5 color paint job with clear coat is going to run you $20-25K. I would seriously question putting this many $$$$$ in a 17 year old unit. If it were mine I would take those $$$$$ and apply towards a newer unit. I would also be sure I had a fiberglass roof & waxed the entire unit (including roof) twice a year if it's going to sit outside in Arizona & once a year if it's stored inside. How's your tires & hoses?

Yes Capt Bill, that's exactly what we're thinking. Someone's gonna get a beautifully maintained Star even tho she's a little warn around the edges!

I talked with a body shop last year possibly having ours redone. $12000 atleast, he suggested maybe having the outside redone using vinyl graphics wrap (like used on some city busses). $4000. Price is cheaper, but I'm not sure how it would stand up like paint does, and what it would look like

Hello,
A wrap can look really good if the company (installers) really know what they're doing, prep is thorough, and you select the best material. There are different levels of the vinyl I'm told.

Only thing is, as you might have guessed, it doesn't look exactly like paint although it can be attractive, and have a shine to it. The other is, I've been told by folks in that business that a wrap is usually guaranteed for about 5 to 6 years.

This is dependent though upon the conditions around you. Like if it bakes in the sun all the time etc. It is a decent alternative to paint if it fits your situation in my opinion.

Best regards,
W.D.

Precision Paint in Bremen did ours over 6yrs. ago, and it still fools people when I tell them it's now 16yrs. old. Back then it was $13k with two coats of clear. Just make sure you don't have one with the dreaded checking, or else it will be a waste of money.
