A&E Topper Replacement

I didn't realize that the bedroom slide topper had tears after 13 years of service.

As a result, I was forced to remove the topper during a recent camping trip, sliding out the unit from the roller and metal sun-cover.

However, I did not "pin" the roller and it wound back.

Now, I have ordered a new topper using measurements from the old topper.

I see that I must "pre-load" the roller by winding it 13 to 15 turns in the same direction that it normally rotates as the slide is deployed.

Any advice?

RV Geeks on YouTube has a how to video that is very informative on the process of toppers. Should help you!

I agree watch that video on replacement, I've done several not really that hard, but check on the preload it's important to get that right.

I did both on my 2003 Dutch Star. I used a short piece of just-right-size PVC sch 40 for a cheater handle on the unfurl lock to make it easier on me, to turn/preload the roller.

I would suggest gripping by hand near the center of tube and rolling inward toward coach. Use the channel where fabric connects to roller as a reference point to count turns. When you have the desired number of turns have someone insert a flat blade screwdriver into one of the slots on end cap of tube to hold tube from unwinding.
As another person advised, you can find a u-tube video on line that will show how to replace the fabric from removal to install.

>>When you have the desired number of turns

I reckon that will be trial and error.

The rest is duck soup.

I had the same problem as OP and repaired yesterday. Ours failed due to a manufacturer defect, the seam of topper that is hot welded together came apart. Removed topper and DW ran it through her sewing machine using outdoor thread. What a gal! Anyway we (really helps to have 2 people) rolled the drum towards the coach(clockwise looking a right end) for 14 turns. Installed topper, measured to ensure close distance from each end and slowly let it roll up. Ran bedroom slide in and out few times for inspection.

After job I noticed one of the topper bracket screws into slide was backed out about half way. Went all the way around coach tightening bracket screws and most were loose. Some 1-2 turns but most 1/4-1/2 turn loose.
