A/C Return Filters - Clean or Replace?

Greetings from Portland. Was checking for a vibration noise behind ceiling AC fixture and found return filters are very dirty. Should they be replaced or can they be cleaned? To remove them, must the four screws be removed or is there a trick to removing the plastic piece holding the filter in place? Thank you! Click image for larger version

You can easily clean them by pulling straight down in the center area of the cover. The first one will make you nervous but then you will see how easy it is. The screws do not need to be removed. The center connection will release the cover and the foam filter can be removed and cleaned.

I purchased a few extra from Newmar but they clean very easily.

Mine need cleaning also but I was a little concerned on just how hard to pull on vent without breaking something. Any particular way to get a hold of the center part of the vent since there's not much room for a finger hold.

I used two fingers on each hand as close to the center as possible and pulled straight down. Yes, it was scary as it seemed to require significant downward pressure, yet once enough straight downward pressure was applied, it "popped" out. Next time I will use a vacuum first as a tremendous amount of dust was released into the air when it popped out. After removal, I simply ran it under water to remove the remaining dust.

AC Return Filters - Clean or Replace?

I have found that if you grasp near the center and use a slight wiggling motion as you pull down the vent will pop easily. HOWEVER..... over the course of time the plastic will age and you will get too enthusiastic sometimes, and things will snap-- particularly the plastic spring clips molded into the center back of the vent. That's why it's a good idea to order a few from Newmar so you have some spares.

AC air return filters

Newmar parts folks suggested that I twist the vent slightly while pulling down. Seems to help. Haven't broken one while doing that.

Just keep in mind that "Any" type of filter is not 100% efficient till it has been used and is a little dirty........just like the engine's air filter.

Thanks!

We had just tried getting into one of those the other day without success. Your technique worked perfectly and now we have clean filters!

I clean mine (wash them) but I bought a sheet of window air conditioner filter material at Lowes. It's usually next to the Window A/C Units in the aisle with fans/AC. One sheet will be enough to do the whole RV. That way I have a fresh set to install while the other set is drying. About $3 if I remember correctly.

Exactly what I did years ago with the '02 DSDP.
