Accident waiting to happen, lower hose!

Read to many thread's on IRV2 about the lower radiator hose getting tore off from road debris. This is for sure some engineering at its finest! Several thread's on expensive tow bill, $300.00 hose(one fella said) coolant, labor and just a bad day from this hose getting tore off. So while home this summer and doing maintenance, thought it was time to make something to protect this hose. Most don't ever see it hanging down cause of the rear full width flap(Ad Flap)...........

Darn sideways photo's......

That looks good. For ease of mind, you might think about some anti-abrasion protection if the guard is close to, or touching the hose. I can't tell from the pictures.

Never had a radiator hose stick down like that, thank goodness. I've had rear and side radiator Freightliner.

Last year I changed out all the cooling system hoses as a precautionary measure since they were ten years old. In all of North America, per Freightliner's system and based on all the searches both my SIL and I did, there was only ONE that was the part number I needed for my lower radiator hose, and that was in Canada. Kudos to Neal Cox and Currie Truck Center Barrie in Midhurst, ON for not charging me any more than the normal price for it as well as taking care of shipping at a very reasonable cost.

I kept my old one as a spare. Might be easier to find without Covid supply chain issues, but just be aware that these kinds of hoses might not be just sitting all over in stock. Well worth taking precautions to protect from damage, if exposed.

Agree, that is a "drag your butt" waiting to drain your coolant.

Have you explored alternate/higher hose routing?

Don't think your protection bar would do much good if transiting a steep dip that would put much of the weight of the back of the coach on it.

In the OP's images, does the radiator hose actually come from the factory that way? It looks like a custom made hose, one with a shallower dip, might be a better solution than having it and the bracket sticking down so far.

This lower hose comes from the engine and goes to the transmission cooler, and yes, I explored different routes, but it where they mounted the cooler that does not allow a change in the hose........... not worried about dragging, it is still plenty high enough, the transmission is lower..........
Like I mentioned, most don't know about this hose on the K2 and K3 chassis till the hit something and need a tow.........Several thread's on these hose's getting tore off.

Factory hose from Spartan.........
The transmission cooler would have to be raised on the frame rail.......no room above it........

Has anyone looked at their lower hose? Mine is a 2012 , just wondering if anything has changed? Like I mentioned, most never see it behind the "Ad Flap"...... or under the Coach working........
Would like to see picture's of other's........... Take a look.......

That does appear to be a design flaw. Hope it’s been corrected. Kudos to OP for correcting or modifying his.

I hate when someone suggests something different than what I did/made, but I will through this out there. I know you made the nice bracket, but maybe just replace the hose with something else.

Sometimes I make something and then see a better idea somewhere else. I would hate to hit that arm on something and kick it back into the toad or something else. You can buy mandrel bent tubing online. Here is a pipe that would work. Cut both hoses and install the pipe up against the frame and then hose clamp it back together.
