Added whole coach interior lighting control to above bed

This mod brings full coach interior lighting control to above the bed. Having lived with this mod for a couple of months; it's up there as one of my fav's. Not sure if it's been done before - but it's worth sharing...

Disclaimer - This project is on a 2020 4081, using the KiB Lighting Control on that model year. If you decide to try the mod - please test before you start cutting!

Background
  • Going to bed there's often a pesky last light left on - so I wanted the "All Off" feature - from the bed.
  • The entry light control has a couple of handy "hidden features" that allow you to switch off all the lights; and switch on most lights.
  • The KiB lighting system works on a three wire power/ground/data concept; so you can add switches easily at existing switch locations.

So... let's add the "Entry" lighting control above the bed and enjoy "All Off", and living, bed, and bath lighting controls.

Shopping list:
  • Call Newmar parts - order the appropriate entry switch control pad for your coach. Be sure to order the mounting bezel too (it's a no-cost item!). It was about $200.
  • The new switch plate comes with a Y-Cable to connect into the coach's existing wiring harness.

Install:
  • Pop the existing keypads out; tape the wiring harness up so as you cut the wooden cabinet you don't slice the wires.
  • Tape off and cut the cut-outs for the bezel. A Dremel with a cutting disc worked well.
  • Plug the supplied wiring harness to the existing wiring. Thread the harnesses so each location has a connector.
  • Connect the light switches; and click them in place.

Notes:
  • "All-On" : Simultaneously press the top & middle left buttons
  • "All-Off" : Simultaneously press the middle & bottom left buttons
  • The new keypad's backlight is controlled from the kitchen (Backlight Control)
  • The indicator LEDs work as you'd expect

Great project! Thanks for sharing the detailed photos! I have to say the KIB wiring looks intimidating, so I appreciate the education.

Nice idea to give you control of all the lights in the bedroom. Without running out and looking at mine, can that switch backlight be turned off from there on yours. I believe on mine the sink controller does the dimming. Or are you just leaving all of off them off requiring the double tap to turn them on?

You’re correct, the backlight control is from the sink. We always leave our back lights off.

ChrisFSB, thank you for a very nice description of your upgrade.

I would really like to add "All Off" capability at the head of my bed. (IMO, it should be done by Newmar on ALL of their coaches!)

My question: Will this work on a 2021 LADP?
I ask because my control panels look a bit different than yours. I believe my system uses KIB controls. So, it is possible that we have panels that are functionally equivalent (where any differences are only cosmetic).

If case you can't answer the question above, maybe you can suggest a way that I could test / check / or inspect my system to determine if your approach would work.

Thanks in advance!

This has me wondering if the KIB panel above the bed in the 2022 DS would work in the earlier coaches - it has a all off button in the panel - maybe if someone else was to do this mod, they would just buy the panel for the '22 and replace the existing.

It would be nice if I knew how to use, or if needed, program the KIB to use the unused circuits on my 2021 CS 3927. It would be nice to have a "factory" switch to control added outside lights. Anybody know the secrets?

I don't know.

If it were my coach I'd pop out on of the existing switch plates and look at the wiring.

If it's the same style as in my photo's I'd roll the dice and order up a switch to test.

You need to worry about two possible compatibility issues "Power" and "Data".

"Power" : Assuming the switch runs on 12v; then that's fine.

"Data" it's going to be a matter of if duplicate switch id's cause communication issues on the KiB Data Bus. In mine, it does not. However, I'm not familiar with the KiB system in the LA - so that's the risk/test you need to be comfortable making.

So how hard could it be to reprogram one of those KIB panels? Somebody on here must have figured it out.

The mechanic at my dealer said that there are no issues having two switches with the same ID. In my case, a cabinet I'm building in makes the wall switch behind the couch inaccessible to DW. I'm ordering a second switch and will splice it into the system. The switches are set to emit certain codes when hit; the rest of the system doesn't care what device issued them. In the case of the OP, his switch reacts to the backlight command from the switch in the kitchen, and responds to this code no matter where in the coach it is physically located.

sdhexpert,
Does your panel look the same as that in Chris' photo (other than the all off option)?
Thanks

Apparently the 2023 models have a mounted tablet to monitor coach functions that kib runs, an app too. Wonder if that could be added?

Sorry for the late reply - but yes they appear to be the same series/model.
