Air Compressor Maintenance

1998 MM w/Cummins 8.3. Any ideas what needs to be done to properly maintain the air compressor? Would hate for that thing to quit on the road.
Thanks,
Paul

Hi PaulO,
Just change the air dryer about once a year. Consider doing this along with the other annual chassis maintenance.

Paul,
Not sure about the compressor it's self, but one important thing you can do yourself is change the air dryer. I have a 2000 american eagle with cummins 8.3. It has a an air dryer coming right off the compressor called system saver 1200. Not changing this frequent enough can cause problems if moisture gets into your brake or suspension system. My friend just paid 500 to have his changed after he had problems with his brakes. I just bought one from NAPA for 25 bucks, spartan wanted 115. All you need to change it is a strap wrench and let the air out of the systsem.

Good luck,
Bill

Go to cummins quick serve web site and reguestor for free. type in your engine serial number and it will let you know if there are any recalls. When I did that, on my 8.3, tI said I have a recall on a bushing for the air compressor. I hadn't had the fixed yet. I guess I should go ahead and get it in, but our cummins dealer doesn't have a steller reputation. I assume they're replace it for free.
