Air conditioner shrouds
I had to replace two of the three AC Shrouds on my coach. They were on Dometic Penguin II
We stopped at truck stop for fuel in Missouri Valley IA a couple weeks ago on a very gusty windy day. While we were parked there our middle AC shroud blew off and flew across the parking lot in many pieces. When we arrived in WI a few days later I got up on the roof and the front shroud was cracked as well. I replaced both today and was surprised they are held with only four screws and several were missing and a couple loose. Vibration I imagine. The purpose of mentioning this is encourage others to check the screws Shrouds are not cheap. We were very fortunate to have this happen in a parking lot and not on the road.

They make/sell a rubber backed 1" diameter meta washer that I use under the screws if I have a reason to remove the shroud. It distributes the pressure and keeps the shroud from cracking.

I had the same thing happen on a very windy day at a campground with a previous motorhome. In my case, the plastic had become fragile from exposure to the elements. All the screws were still tight; the plastic was just torn apart by a very strong wind gust. So while you're up on the roof checking the screws, also check the integrity of the plastic AC covers.

We had our Essex at the factory and one of the things done was they put 2 extra screws in the side of the AC covers. I then put fender washers which are over sized washers between each screw and the AC cover. In 14 years never lost on even after traveling over 140K miles in all kind of weather conditions.

All good suggestions. There are extra places predrilled in the AC rim for additional screws including the middle. Just need to drill holes additional holes in shroud for them. I imagine cover was pretty brittle as Holt is saying.

Every couple of months I drag myself up on the roof and clean the outside of my a/c covers and then give them a good coating with 303. I do the same thing with fan lids and skylights. Any and all plastic, pvc, or anything else up there is going to get severe UV damage if not protected.

every six months I get up and clean them all with Windex, then use protectall on all of them. I believe it has kept all of those plastic things limber and reduces the brittleness of plastic exposed to the sun. Coach is an 07, and nothing broken yet. Did the same on the 5th wheel we owned, and again, never had issues. Hail got the vent cover in a camper one time in Bend, OR, but you cannot fight weather.
