2019 Bay Star 3609 Dinette/Sofa slide gear box fail

23K miles in two years and gear box and motor failed. Of course it was not covered. Close but 1 1/2 months too late. When on the road some thngs are bound to happen. Newmar said gear box and motor rarely fail. Hmmmm. Required a mobile mechanic with a truck full of tools to replace unit. Parts, air freight and mobile mechanic ended up costing over $3000.00. Repair time 4 days to figure everything out, get parts and 9 hours to repair. Not fun but we were back on the road. Cruising around full time is not for the faint of heart.

In looking at your gear box, I would say that the broken flange can be repaired. I owned a machine / welding shop before I retired and repairing the flange is not that hard, if you have the right equipment. To do it, I would place a full sheet of plate over the flange area, bolt it to the body and drill matching holes for the flange bolts. The current housing i made of what we call "pig metal", the slag from the bottom of the barrel. Junk metal. Just like MDE "glued sawdust wood", junk. I remember back in the 90s making new screw nuts for a slide out that operated by a screw. The old nuts were make of grey pvc. The ones I made were made of brass and would last for years. A mobile mechanic brought the screw to me to make the nuts. Odd jobs like that were fun and a welcome break from my regular customers. Ken

On our 2006 Tuscany, we can't put the slides in or out while the motorhome is running, safety issue.

Slide motors

As I read all the threads, not one talked about how clean the electrical connections were. Please note "There is no such thing as to clean".
12 volts is low pressure & the slightest corrosion will drop voltage thus limit current. I am surprised that those RV that have 2 or motors or more & a controller PWC the circuit should have current & voltage sensors in each leg to the motors & and a high current (stalled motor) & low voltage input too.
To avoid bad grounds a grounding strap would be a good idea too making sure that both ends are connected to CLEAN & BEAR metal with a sealing grease to keep out moisture.
Sure glad I do not have any slides in my 1994 HR 37' DP, but there is a lot of electrical connections that are crowded that I am cleaning & sealing up.
Also the to clean also goes for copper solder joints in pipes & wires too.
John..... My Cessna was cheaper to maintain, sure miss her.

Anyone know of a shop that can do it?
It's a 12v motor. They can be rebuilt just like the HWH pump motor for leveler system. I've them rebuiLt at a alternater shop in PA

Check with Bontrager's RV Surplus.. This place is almost a "bucket list" stop for RVers. They have more RV Stuff, including slide motors than anyplace other than the builders. They are good people, know RV and will help...

Funny you all mention running the coach motor or have to plug into shore power to operate a 12 vt dc motor on your coach. On my ‘04 HR Neptune I can only move the slide outs with the engine off, yet I need the engine on (or at least the ignition in the on position) to operate the leveling jacks. Power priorities, I guess.

Dealing with this now

2001 Monaco Diplomat, my slide motor quit on me. I can't find a direct replacement (Power Gear is out of business). Many "replacement" motor assemblys come up when searching but none look like a direct fit. I do not know the amp draw or the rpm for my unit. I took it to several motor repair shops in my area and nobody wants to deal with a small dc motor. Out of options I took things apart 2 days ago. Brushes were gummed up and not making contact. Sprayed contact cleaner on everything, emeryed the commutator. The brush end of the motor shows overheating, probably from brush arcing. I thought I was good to go but wanted to loosen up the brushes a bit more. That's when the overheated plastic part that the brush housings were mounted broke. That's were I am today, trying to figure out how to repair the scorched, 20 year old plastic piece.

It is probable that the plastic piece can be made on a 3D printer. If you saved the parts, send me a picture so I can evaluate whether or not the part can be printed.

The plastic ring could probably be 3D printed but I'm afraid it wouldn't survive the removal for scanning. As you can see it's held in place by 4 pins from the casting that are peened over. I'm guessing that the spring mounting pins are also peened over. There are 4slots cut in the plastic and tabs on the brush holders are through the slots and bent over. Doable, but not an easy job.
My plan is to drill a few holes with a micro drill bit, cut an oversized piece to span the gap and epoxy it under the existing plastic. The surface can't be cleaned properly so I'm hoping the epoxy squeezes through the drilled holes. Then I can epoxy the missing piece to the bridge.
What do you think?

I must express extreme gratitude and appreciation to IRV2 for publishing this newsletter, and for the huge amount I have learned during the past year that I have been receiving and reading it. We have owned RVs since the mid 1960s. After many tent-campers, travel trailers, and 50+ years of dreaming of owning a class A motor home, we bought one in 2019. It was a 2013 35' entry level gasser; beautiful to look at but a nightmare for expensive repairs. In February 2021 we upgraded to a 2014 Newmar Ventana 4037 DP. So far, with over 6000 miles, it has been wonderful and a real learning experience. Many of your writers have been extremely helpful, especially "Dutch Star Don". THANK YOU! Doug & Pam

I had never thought about 3D printing a replacement gear and was surprised to see that there are several companies that will do just that. Here is my slide motor gear. The plastic part interfaces directly to the motor shaft. The plastic gear is somehow joined to a metal gear. Is the plastic part just pressed on and off?
