Anyone upgrade their DS power entry steps to 3 step?

I would like to upgrade the steps to a 3 step unit. Looking for anyone who has done this.

I have thought about doing this also but haven't done any research yet.

I don't know anyone who has done the step. I do know someone had the emergency door in bathroom added for 7K. While talking about major changes adding Comfort Drive can't be added to older coaches on less the sky is the limit.

The problem with adding a three step unit....when the coach is sitting high in the front, it would be great, but when the coach is sitting low in the front, the step will strike the ground.

I know that Newmar was using the self leveling steps for awhile, but haven't seen them lately and can't find them on line.

The 3 step unit is electric over HWH hydraulically operated. This would be a major mod.
I like the steps on my LA, but wouldn’t spend big bucks just for them. I also have to be careful near a curb or pump island as they can be expensively damaged if they hit something on the way out.

Aren't they supposed to stop if they hit something? That's what I was told when looking at the King Aire.

that's my understanding. The Kwikee web site shows several that state that feature.

There is a sensor on the front of the bottom step (chin sensor). when it makes contact with an object, it'll stop the step.

There is another sensor under the bottom step as well. They work generally, but there are occasions when they may not function as expected.

also, when the sensors absorb any moisture, they will short and the step will stop functioning. They have their challenges as well.

With the bags deflated, on mine a third step would hit the dirt. On the other hand, aired up it is a bit high for first step. I keep one of these just inside the door for those times when a third step would be handy. Not repping for home depot

I asked Newmar this very question not long after taking delivery of our 2016. The 17s came with the three step, ours was the last year that did not.

Firstly, the steps installed at time of manufacture are, as someone said, hydraulic. They said they could not retrofit those. They could, however, install an all electric version, for $7000! We passed.

Later met someone with a slightly older Mountain Aire that had come standard with the electric version. He told me he'd had nothing but trouble with them. A small spring has a tendancy to break making it impossible to retract the steps. He was now buying replacement springs in bulk.
