Smile Atwood Leveling Jacks

I have a 2007 Ventana with ATtwood electric Leveling Jacks. Recently I was unable to raise on jack in the retract all mode and would like to know if anyone else has had this problem.

I was able to raise the jack by putting the coach in gear since I had read this was a safety feature. After continuing to have this problem, I spoke to Attwood and was told the control board was stuck in an alarm mode. The solution that seems to have worked was to raise the jack in question manually (used an electric drill with 1/2 inch socket attached). After raising it about an inch, I was able to operate it manually from the panel even though I still had an alarm condition (two blinking lights on the touch pad in the position of the jack in question). I then was told by attwood to raise the jacks manually and then to set them by using extend all (not auto). AFter this, I manually leveled the coach and then went through the level reset procedure. This seems to have worked which I will confirm tomorrow when I leave the park I am currently staying in.

I have heard some comments that Attwood jacks have a lot of problems and that Tiffin removed them from their Phaeton coaches in a recall at no cost to their customers. Has anyone had any experience like this with Attwood jacks or any general comments about this topic?

Thanks, Don

You might ask your question on the Tiffin thread at Tiffin Motorhomes Owners Forum - iRV2 Forums I have Atwoods and have not heard about any systematic replacement, although we did have a jack fail that was replaced without an issue. Tiffin is now using only HWH's on the Phaeton and higher end coaches as far as I know. I don't know about their other coaches.

I called Bob Tiffin last year and told him I had trouble with my Atwood jacks. I asked him if they would replace my Atwoods with HWH. He said "we don't do that". He then told me to come to Red Bay and he felt sure they could fix any problem I had. I did and they did. At no cost.

I've heard about Bob Tiffin's involvement, attitude, and cooperation. Another reason for his company's success.

On a whim I called HWH and asked them what they would charge to put a set of their jacks on our 40' Allegro Bus. The estimate came to just over $5000.

Yes, Don, I too had one Atwood electric system jack (right rear) fail to retract on my last outing (yesterday). Initially, retract system didn't respond at all; then only when I pushed RET and FRONT together, and all jacks except right rear retracted. No other button pushing got last jack to raise, until I put foot HARD on brake, and put transmission in gear. System went into emergency retract mode, and last jack raised.

What was the reset procedure you used. My IOM manual is nearly undeciferable?

Thanks, Zack

I feel your pain Dlane. We also have an 07 Ventana with Attwoods. I have had the controller replaced once, both rears blow out the gear sets, one front strip gears and a second rear replaced for the second time, all that in 18000 miles. I spent hours on the the attwood tech line, the last rep wanted to know axle weight, implying that the OEM may have "under speced" the jacks so off I went to Brazels. When I called back with numbers weights were "OK" Apparently the Attwood rating isn't that the jack will LIFT the rated weight, only that it will stabilize the rated weighted rate. So, if you park on a level site, if the controller is properly programed and if you dump air the jacks will keep the coach from rocking. If you expect anything more you will probably start breaking things.

Replaced my Atwood electrics on the AllStar with HWH after 8 failures. Cost $5000.

I have "level legs" on our 2007 Kountry Star DP. Had one jack fail early , replaced under warranty, They have worked perfectly and like they are supposed to for the past 4 plus years. I originally had serious doubts about them, but since the early failure have had less problems than I had with HWH on previous coaches.

Since my initial problem with leveling and a subsequent event where one of the motors came loose and hung by its wiring, my jacks have also performed flawlessly for three years now. Like imgoin4it, I also had my doubts after experiencing a hydraulic system on a previous coach, Big Foot, but am now a believer in the electrics.

We just bought a 2006 Southwind and after one use of the Atwood leveling jacks, they bit the dust. Atwood says they no longer make the controller for this system so we can't get it repaired through our extended warranty company (still fighting this battle and it may require a lawyer). We have to replace the TOTAL system! We are not very happy about all of this as you can well imagine, but the battle has just begun. I'm going to be a dog with a bone and get them to cough it up ... anyway, someone is going to cough it up ... either Atwood, the extended warranty company or the dealer that we bought the coach from.

This thread may have answered a question I had on my 2005 Scottsdale that I bought used earlier this year and the Atwood controller had been disconnected with a remote control provided from Gama Electronics taking its place and no one could say why that might have been. Perhaps the controllers aren't holding up or are discontinued. The Gama remote and Atwood Leveler jacks have done all I've asked of them and maybe it's best to manually control these "older" systems.
