Bay Star - Bad speaker acoustics

2018 Bay Star - JBL speakers. The driver side speaker can't go above 15 without causing major distortion, almost like the speaker is blown. I pulled it out of the cabinet, and it is fine - can go up to 25 with no issues.

I tried putting rubber grommets/washers between the speaker and the cabinet to isolate it, but I think the inside of the 'speaker cabinet' is hollow and there may be some lose parts somewhere causing them to vibrate.

Has anybody had a similar issue and solved it?

Interesting. I have the exact same model coach and exact same issue. I too thought the speaker was blown, but now I question if that is the case.

I have read on this site plenty of opinions that the speakers are not very good. I won't claim to be an audiophile, but I had thought about replacing them with something better since I was having an issue with the driver's side speaker. If the cabinet is causing the issue, I wonder if this would actually solve the issue with sound quality.

Same problem on the BSS. Seems the speakers cause the floor of the cabinets above to vibrate, rattle. Until you can keep the cabinet from vibrating changing the speakers would cause more frustration.

I think we’re hearing the result of a bad speaker enclosure rather than (or in addition to) a bad speaker.

As a test someone could disconnect the speaker from the cabinet and see what it does to the sound.

The floor of the cabinet above the speaker is very thin and is probably the problem as previously stated. Try putting a heavy towel on the cabinet floor above the speaker. If that cures it, you can use some acoustic mat on it.

It sounds like the OP did what you are describing and the speaker sound quality improved. I think others are correct in that it is the cabinet.

I am thinking of trying to put some egg crate foam inside of the cabinet to absorb the sound so that it dampens it.

Wonder why it doesn't happen with the passenger side, but if I fix it for the driver side i'll probably do the same for both.

Mine happens on both sides. Kind of depends what is sitting in the cabinet above the speaker. At least that’s my story....

I have a DVD player, satellite receiver, the HDMI splitters, along with a couple other electronic devices over the driver but nothing over the passenger side. I wonder if they are vibrating or if it is the cabinet itself.

Buy some egg crate foam at Wally World. Cut to fit above the speaker. That should take care of the issue.

I would try taking a piece of 1/2" plywood, cut it to fit the bottom of the cabinet, cover it in carpet so that it looks like it belongs there and then screw it down at the four corners.

You will need some sound dampening material to get rid of the vibration. Newmar's "tuned" JBL sound system consists of a cavity that extends below the bottom shelf of those cabinets, it's about 2" thick and hoes across between each speaker. This increases the bass of the speakers but causes all sorts of rattles in the cabinets. Open a cabinet door and tap in the center of it with your finger and you'll get the idea. You need either some Boom Mat, Hush Mat or Dynamat. Different names for all the same thing. It has an adhesive backing and I attached it to the back of the cabinet doors as well as the underside of the shelves. I also bought some 1/4" rubber mat to put on top of the shelves to keep the stuff on the shelves from rattling. I can post some pics if anyone is interested. These steps have made the speakers sound much much better.

Bay Star - Bad speaker acoustics

My radio (Sony SW900BT) seems to support a subwoofer.

Adding a subwoofer would allow us to move the heavy bass signals out of the cabinet. The flimsy cabinet floor may still vibrate with midrange frequencies.

I also found there is a firmware update for my radio.

I experienced the same issue on my 2017 Baystar. During a warranty follow up at Napannee they shoved batten insulation in the hollow compartment and this resulted in improvement but not elimination. I think you have to open up the compartment directly above the speaker allowing relief of vibration. When I get my unit out of storage next month, I plan to remove speaker then carefully drill holes using an auger bit. That is my plan but haven't executed yet
