Bay Star Basement Door Latches

The latch on my electrical bay hasn’t been working well and I finally took a closer look to see if a little lubrications would fix it.

I found the latch cable was frayed and catching on the rear lock plate. That plate was installed with the cable feeding through a top slot and the cable had been rubbing on that slot, causing the problem.

I checked a door on the other side of the coach and found they had routed the cable through a side slot and it wasn’t binding, so I removed and rotated the plate so the cable feeds through a slot on the side.

I still need to replace that cable, but rotating the back plate helped.

For some reason, all the basement latches on the right side of my coach are installed with the cable feeding through the side slot (the right way?) and all the doors on the left side are installed with the cables feeding through the top slot.

When we were at the factory, they had one guy doing bay doors on one side of the coach and another guy doing them on the other side. The newbie must have done the one side wrong.

Would be nice to know what they should look like for peeps getting a new coach and would check it on the PDI.

I'll add it to my check list for later this year.

Found the exact same problem.

An inspection after reading about this issue I checked my 2017 BS 3403 and found the cable hanging on with a couple of threads of the cable. Ordered the parts along with some Teflon tubing to put around the cable to see if that helps protect the cable as well as rotating the plate. May install the Teflon tubing on all cable latches if it doesn’t interfere with the mechanism.

I neglected to add that this issue with the cables has been a forum topic before. The previous issue dealt with the cables pulling out of the cable lock. Many of us added a second cable clamp to ensure they didn't pull loose. The cables are one of the few inexpensive parts you can buy from Newmar.

I had the same problem, as others have said I also added cable lock. On several doors I added this emergency cord, works great but have never needed it.
