Well, it is a rant. Rants are rarely organized and well edited.
The truly important thing to note is that based on available evidence, historical record, and consumer information, all of her general points and accusations are true. My disappointment with the article lies in the fact that this author is a doctor, an educated woman who ought to know how to perform and evaluate research. And yet she still wound up buying one of these.
When my wife and I decided to go the full timing route about 11-12 years ago we knew nothing- absolutely nothing- about large RVs, so research was the first priority. We were still many months away from deciding between trailer and motorhome, but it’s quite easy to go browsing at an RV dealer. We were at a dealer out of town one day when the salesman suggested a test drive. We hadn’t even been thinking that far ahead yet, but we accepted.
This was a brand new gas powered Class A, a Georgetown iirc, so it looked nice, everything was new, etc. And it was priced at about $75K, which was in our ballpark. Well…. what an eye opener! The noise, the handling. We could barely carry a conversation, and on the faster roads it was impossible. Driving this reminded me immediately of the school buses and box trucks I had had cause to drive in my younger days. It was awful. We smiled and nodded, said the right things and thanked the salesman when we got back. And left, thoroughly disillusioned. That was the first and last time I drove a gas powered motorhome.
Well, I ramble on, as I am wont to do. We continued to research, learned a great deal, and a year later spent slightly less money on a ten year old Dutch Star, in which we have lived and travelled these past ten years. Even today, at age 20, I think this coach would be judged a better value than that same Georgetown at age 11.
I read many posts here, as I’m sure you do, on the performance and handling of gas powered coaches, but usually I abstain, partly because I have no substantial ownership experience. But also because based on my research and ongoing learning, I simply do not understand why anyone would buy one. I have found it prudent through the years to avoid debate on matters incomprehensible, such as multiple metal body piercings, or extensive tattooing. That sort of thing. I’m sure you understand.
