Well it depends on what you like to do. We spent 5 months there 2 winters ago and enjoyed it very much. In face, just went back for another week because we are now looking for property to buy in the area.
If you like to hike in some really amazing mountains and desert terrain, it is a perfect location because you are surrounded by the Arizona Sky Island region of mountain ridges, all within a 30-60 minute drive. We hiked about 4 hours every day. You are perfectly situated in Benson to explore the Cochise Stronghold, the Chiricahuas, the Santa Ritas, Catalinas, Pusch Ridge, Tortolitas, Whetstones, the Rincon ridge, the Huachucas down near Sierra Vista, and of course the East Saguaro National Monument where you can spend weeks exploring with all the trails that it feeds into. The incredibly beautiful Arizona Trail connects many of these locations, and there are excellent maps available online for each passage of the trail. Karchner Cavern State Park is just south of Benson, and provides access to more amazing trails in addition to the cavern itself.
Benson has some decent old-SW style restaurants and a Walmart, Ace Hardware, and Tractor Supply for all your basics; as well as a hospital and a post office. And you are only about a half hour from Vail/Tucson if you need anything beyond the basics.
If you stay in one of the parks along highway 80, the road that runs south from Benson to Tombstone and Bisbee, you will have the benefit of the lonesome whistles of many not-far-away trains due to proximity to the railyard on the east side of the highway, which operates 7/24. You may get used to it after awhile.
